Would you be offended if you received a holiday card with a New Testament verse on it?
We are practicing Christians and this year our Christmas card features photos from Henry's baptism. I thought it would be appropriate to include a bible verse as part of the message, but we have a few Jewish friends on our mailing list and I don't want to offend. If it makes any difference, none of them are really practicing...I'd be willing to bet most of them haven't been to temple since childhood.
I could also just buy a special card for them and include a photo with it.
Thoughts?
Re: jewish moms--a question
I remember this discussion came up a few weeks back. Most people were not offended but a few of us were. I am someone that would be. I wouldn't be so offended that I wouldn't want to be your friend, but it wouldn't sit well with me.
For example, the other day DH and I got a card that said Merry Christmas and something about the Lord blessing us. We both commented on it as making us uncomfortable.
My advice is if you want to be safe get seperate cards OR write something on the card like Happy Hanukkah or sorry for the Christian theme but the sentiment is the same, we wish you the best for Hanukkah and the New Year.
Btw, it is very thoughtful of you to ask...I think that shows a great level of sensitivity.
I'm not a mom yet, but I am Jewish (and have been to synagogue as recently as two months ago), and that wouldn't offend me. I know that people all have their own beliefs.
I once received a card from a client at Christmas that a mass was being said in my name, and even though I am not Catholic, it was a very sweet and meaningful thing to receive. I am all about the spirit of the holidays, no matter what your faith.
I would not be offended......but I prefer to get cards that are more "holiday" than just Christmas-related.......
We have lots of non-Jewish friends and most do generic holiday cards so they fit families of all faiths, but again, I would not be offended.....
Thanks to all of you who answered!
Hey C!
I am a pretty religious, practicing Jew. That being said, I would not be offended at all. I do think it is very sweet and considerate to even think about that. The cards we are sending out with a pic of our girls with our dog is a Happy Hannukah card and we wrote Happy New Year on it. I hope that doesn't offend my non-Jewish friends!!
