may be dumb? (new to chicago)

what should I be dressing the kids in when we go out? I'm wondering if when its raining and snowing out and Im taking my 4 year old to school do I put her in snow pants like over her other pants or just wear her regular clothes plus snow jacket? for the baby I got her a carrier cover so Im assuming that I just dress her warm and zip her up in the cover is enough? sorry this may be dumb to some of you but Im from California and we just moved! thanks any advice would be appreciated!

  • Does your 4 year old get to go outside during the day?  Are you walking or driving to school?  I would say if she goes outside or you have a significant walk better to go with the snow pants.  Chicago weather changes quickly and it is better to keep her comfortabe.

Baby, I'm not as certain about but I would guess that's generally fine unless of course you have some problem where you would need to take her out of the cover, then you will want her  in some kind of appropriate coat and leg covering so that you can see to her.

  • hey I don't have any kids yet, but I grew up here in the cold and lived here all my life, I also babysat lots of kids and had to take them to school in the mornings, etc.

You should talk to your child's school to ask if they let you take a change of clothes for your child to change into at school.  I know that my niece gets all bundled up for the snow if it's really snowy then at school they help them get undressed down into their "indoor clothes" and then they put all their outdoor clothes in a locker, and change back in the afternoon.

Also some schools require you to have separate items of clothes for them to keep at school in case they forget to wear a sweater or something gets dirty, peed on, or wet from the snow.

And like today (it's 20 degrees below zero with the windchill here) you want to avoid going outside with a baby I'm sure :)

Good luck! Dealing with pregnancy, babies, kids and the crappy weather here is NOT something I'm looking forward to my whole life!!!

  • If you're just carrying the baby in and out of places in the carrier, the cover should be fine.

As for your 4 y.o., I think it depends on her school situation. My daughter's preschool would rather NOT bundle 16 kids into snowpants at the end of the day if they aren't going to be playing outside (ie, if it's too cold). And I'm fine running her to the car in her snowboots, coat, hat and mittens.
