Progesterone shots anyone??

Hey ladies. I'm close to joining you here. My DD came early so to prevent preterm labor this time my OB wants me to take weekly injections on progesterone till about 37 weeks. Is anyone else having to do this? I asked if my insurance would cover them (Aetna) and waiting for a response from them. I read on another site that its quite spendy and I'd like to be prepared if that is so. I also heard its had some bad side reactions too. Any info would be great! Thanks!

Re: Progesterone shots anyone??

  • I took progesterone suppositories called Crinone until 13 weeks.  I start Progesterone shots at 27 weeks, my insurance will cover it.  If you're high risk and or you've had a preemie in the past it should be covered.  It is was too expensive otherwise!

  • I didn't do the shots but I had to take progesterone via suppositories until I was 13 weeks along. The progesterone was a bit expensive but worth it IMO. I think it was $50 for 3 weeks of suppositories. My insurance didn't cover it. It made my morning sickness even worse than it was and I also cramped alot more. But baby's still here so I have no complaints.

I have to agree it makes morning sickness and cramps much worse, but I'll take that if it means I have a healthy baby that bakes as long as possible!

  • I do them and have aetna they don't cover mine but they are only 20 bucks a pop let me know if they cover you thet aren't passed by fda yet they hurt bc they are so thick but have proven succesful in trials my only side effect is a little itchiness good luck
  • Sure I will let you know if they cover them. I was told by someone else to ice your butt down before they stick ya... helps it not sting so much... I hope...

  • for the vile, it was about $80 and that lasted about 4-5 weeks...

as for your insurance, the reason why a lot don't cover it is because its "elective" but in your case (like mine) its preventive. i had my doc immediately send a letter to insurance letting them know it WAS necessary (had DS at 29 weeks and found out pg with twins) and they are coving it...i only had to pay for one vile.

Good Luck and God Bless! <3
