I'm just curious how long you worked while pregnant? I told my doctor I'd like to work until the 2nd week of March when our state testing is over...she laughed at me! I'd be 32 1/2 weeks at that point. She said I'd probably have to go out at 28 weeks....that MAYBE I could stretch it to 30. She said that the way I'm carrying them (all out front) means that I'm going to get very uncomfortable very soon! So..how long did you all work?
Re: Any teachers with twins?
i used to be a teacher so i know how much work it is - on your feet and just mentally draining, too... and i agree with your doc - i think you'd be crazy to work until 32w.
You only get one chance to gestate these babies- and you want to get them as far as you can... being on your feet that long and stressing about testing, etc = not a great way to try and keep them in.
My job has me on my feet a lot now - and i stopped at 27w... i wasn't on bedrest, but i took it VERY easy and made it until 38w. I know if i had continued to work for much longer it wouldn't have been so good.
I teach 8th grade, was due in December, and thought I would work until Thanksgiving. My doctor laughed at me, too.
I never even started the year, which has been super difficult for me. I had a shortened cervix at 27 weeks and was put on strict bedrest. I ended up delivering on Nov. 17th (before I even expected to be leaving work). Keep your hopes high, but just know that it isn't in your control!
I tried to look at it like, "whether or not I'm there for the MEAP (our state test) will not matter in 10 years; whether or not I do the best for my babies will!"
Summer break happened when I was 22 weeks-I had no intention of going back at 31 weeks when summer was over.
I was so uncomfortable, not able to sleep, so early on. I delivered them at 33w4d.
My singleton pregnancy was so different-I thought it was a piece of cake compared to my twin pregnancy.
I teach elementary and my 40wk due date is Jan. 25th. I thought I'd work till Thanksgiving/Christmas Break but my Dr. had other plans. I have had an excellent pregnancy so far with no complications, but by the time I reached 27/28 weeks I was sooo worn down by the end of the day and began to swell and have some back pain from being on my feet all day.
Dr. suggested "modified" bed rest to prevent any problems that could come from my position at work. Basically, I just take it really easy. I spend most of the day on the couch and go out to dinner/movie with dh once a week
It's been 5 weeks and my Dr. told me yesterday that she "likes me at home, as I grow nice sized babies". You're also be better off at home because you will burn less calories than being at school all day. Like Goldie said, you only have one shot at this, so think about the kids in your belly, not the ones in your classroom (i know that sounds bad, but it's true)
GL!
I was due in November, so I rested most of the summer and went back to work in the fall. I went out at 33 weeks, I actually asked if modified bedrest could be an option because work was so exhausting at that point. Turned out I was already dilated and effaced so it was full bedrest for me!
However, my replacement was co-teaching with me, so I wasn't even really doing my full job at that point. I don't know how far I would have made it if I was still teaching on my own. (I teach music, so lots of moving around, dancing is necessary and even just singing and talking a lot was making me out of breath!)
