Help interpreting HCG Betas #1 and 2

Hello, Moms of Multiples!

I'm newly pregnant and my RE is going to be doing a sonogram until about 7 weeks. I'm 5 weeks now and just DYING to know whether or not I have a singleton or more. I'm just starting to learn about what HCG levels mean, but wanted to get your feedback on my first two betas. Here they are:

14dpo: 868

21dpo: 13,000

Are these unusually high? I'm not sure how to interpret them. Do you think I have a singleton in there? Or *gulp* more? Not sure what to make of the jump. Any feedback would be VERY appreciated. Thank you!!!!

  • I kept hearing/reading that you cannot tell until your ultrasound if you are having multiples.  But I have a friend who is pg with twins and was pretty certain I was having twins and all the nurses at my RE's office told me that they suspected twins based on my numbers after the ultrasound confirmed it. My numbers were:

    16 DPO: 884

    18 DPO: 1853

My progestrone was about 126 - a high progestrone level will also help clue you in.

  • HCG isn't really a huge indicator if you are having multiples or not, more of a good indicator that you have a strong healthy pregnant!  Congratulations.  Like pp stated, a high progesterone is a big indicator.  Mine was always 123 and above and that's what made the dr's office think it was twins before my ultrasound.
  • It's hard to go by beta's but mine are in my siggy.
  • Beta's are not a true indicator but mine were:

    (10dp5t) 360
    (12dp5t) 998
    (19dp5t) Over 15,000
    (23dp5t) 44,139

  • congrats!

the first beta is on the higher end- but there are tons of women with high betas who have singletons --- they really don't mean anything.

My singleton and twin betas were almost the same..... That being said- you know you have a chance for twins/trips (3 follies, right?) so I'm sure it will be hard to wait until the US.  Why do they make you wait until 7w?? That SUCKS.  But at least you'll see heartbeat(s) by then.

My first US with my RE was at 5w - saw 2 sacs. At 6w saw the 2 heartbeats.... and here they are today in my siggy :)

best of luck to you- so happy to see another SAIF'er... and maybe we'll see you on here in a couple weeks!

  • at 14 dpiui my  beta was 1,200 - but I was pg with 4 at the time.
  • those levels are way higher than mine but you could still be pregnant with a singleton, like the pp's said.  they ARE really high though!!  I found out at 6w1d and heard the heartbeats last week.
