Braxton Hicks question

So at my Ob appointment yesterday I told my doc that I get a lot of tightenings in my belly, sometimes on one side and sometimes on the other.  She said unless the entire belly contracts its not considered a real Braxton Hicks contraction.  She said if its in an isolated spot its just the babies moving.  What have you guys heard from your docs...this is the first doctor in my practice to explain it like that...TIA!

Re: Braxton Hicks question

  • I don't have an answer, but I have had the same thing happen-- it seems to always happen at night between 9-10:30 and it happens on one side or the other.  So I am curious to see if anyone knows!

  • hmmm....my OB said that it is definitely BH if it is only in certain spots, and when it is the entire uterus is when I should get worried. Though, I do get a lot of them that are my entire uterus and they have monitored it, since they are not causing any changes in my cervix so they are no longer concerned.

  • I get a lot of these as well, mostly on one side (but the other side gets harder, but not as hard).  Some are my entire belly, but that is much less often.  Both my OB and MFM said that it IS a Braxton Hick even if its part of my belly (like the size of an orange or a grapefruit).  The good news was that if it is not the entire belly, the Braxton Hick is likely to have been triggered by movement, but it is still a Braxton Hick---part of the uterus contracts.

  • Well this explains the face on my peri when I told him that whenever I have contractions its the whole belly

  • I got a ton with my DS and have had a TON this pregnancy so far.

I was told that as long as they weren't painful (just tight and uncomfy) and not coming in patterns, not to worry.  I have had some that took my breath away, but they weren't accompanied by pain (and no back pain at all) and no cramping, so I didn't worry too much.

Also I was told if I was getting more than 5 or 6 an hour, to first empty my bladder, then lay down and sip water. Most of the time they went away in 20 mins to an hour.

  • i thougt I was having serious BH, but when I was at my dr I showed him what I felt and it turned out to be just movement.  He pointed out that my lower abdomen was soft even though I felt like the whole thing was tight.  someone - I can't remember which dr described a true BH as like a vice grip over your whole stomach.  I guess the little tighening could be BH as well, but I never asked about that.
