Epidurals and Interstitial Cystitis

Just wondering if any of you had any problems after the birth when trying to urinate.  I am concerned about it if the catheter is in for a very long time.  Did it cause more bladder spasms?

 TIA!

Re: Epidurals and Interstitial Cystitis

  • I don't even know what interstitial cystitis is! Ha.  I had my epi for like 2 hours.  They asked me to pee before I got it, but I couldn't empty my bladder b/c of the contractions were so strong.  I tried really hard, too.  I did not get a catheter for the entire time, either.  When I was pushing, my OB inserted it, drained my bladder, and took it back out.  She told me she was doing it, but I didn't really have a clue.

  • No, I didn't have this, but the catheter was so worth it! I had to pee so bad for hours, but the contractions hurt so bad that I couldn't get out of bed! What a relief when I finally got the epi and the catheter drained my bladder!
  • Yes is the short answer. I had the epi and a catheter in for a while, like hours. Not sure exactly how long.

I had urinary issue pre-PG, but never figured them out. They always felt like a UTI or bladder infection, but I never tested positive for infection. I actually think they may have been horomonal. I also wonder if i have Interstitial Cystitis.

Anyway, about 2 weeks PP I started having those symptoms - not sure if it's from having the catheter or if it's horomonal.

    Not sure if this helps?

  • I didn't get an epi but I do have interstitial cystitis & was worried about getting catheter, so I was happy I didn't have too.

It's nice to see someone else who has it.  How often do you have flare ups?  Are you on any daily meds?  I was on vesicare but had to quit before TTC, I have an appt to see a IC specialist, but It feels kinda of like a waste of time.  Not liek they can do anything.  Luckily I don't flare that often 3-4 time a year.
