It depends on your company, how long you've been working there (ie at least a year or not), and whether or not you are paid. FMLA is 12 wks, but if you won't get paid, a lot of people don't take the whole time due to the lack of income.

Every company is different. My company has no maternity leave policy at all so I ended up only taking a week and a half off bc that was the only vacation time I had. Probably will be about the same this time around as well.
FMLA (applicable to any larger company) requires they allow you 12 weeks unpaid. A lot of doctors recommend a minimum of 6 weeks for the medical recovery of the mother. I think many people base their decision in large part on finances, and take the maximum paid leave they are offered, and supplement with whatever vacation/sick/unpaid time they can afford to use to pad out to the 6-8 week mark (or longer if they can afford and choose to).
I work in HR FMLA is only 6 weeks if you have not been with the company for a year. After a year depending on the state it is 6-12 weeks. Short term disability tends to cover leave of 60% for 6 wks with a vaginal birth and 8 for a c-section.
