Stroller and car seat or Travel system?

Hello MN Mommies and Mommies to be,

I hope you all made it through the first snow storm of the season.  I am due in May and am starting to research travel systems, car seats and strollers.

What would you recommend?  A travel system and purchasing a larger car seat in a few months, or a seperate stroller and car seat?  Which brand would you recommend?

I read the reviews for strollers and see the graco strollers can be heavy (which I don;t know if I mind).

Any advice you can give is helpful!

 Thanks,

Allison

Re: Stroller and car seat or Travel system?

  • I didn't go the travel system route so I can't tell you about it, I just didn't want anything that big and bulky. We ended up getting just a Graco car seat and then the Graco Snap n Go stroller frame to snap the car seat into. super lightweight and easy, and that was good for us for the first 6 months or so and then we got a bigger stroller. It kind of helped to buy a stroller later because I felt we knew more what we were looking for.

  • We were given a recommendation for the BOB, took a look at it among other stollers and fell in love. It's a big spendy, but it's also a jogging stroller, so if you were planning on getting one of those down the line, the price looks a little better. There are attachments that you can buy to put the infant seat on.

    Good luck in your search!

  • If you look at the book called Baby Bargain their pointers were very helpful. First they said Don't get a Travel System and get the car seat you like & a Click & Go Stroller once your little one is here & you know what kind of stroller you would like you get get one. I have the City Mini by Baby Jogger (not a jogger) I LOVE it so much it is light wight, easy fold up & my son really likes it.

  • We did the chicco keyfit30 travel system.  While I like it, I really wish we would have gotten a Bob or Phil and Teds.  I have a Red Castle Whizz that I love for walking/jogging, but they're not sold in the US anymore.

I think it depends mostly when you'll use your stroller.  If it's mostly for mall walking and inside stuff smaller you might be fine with a travel system stroller or something lighweight like a Maclaren.  If you plan on doing lots of outside stuff do something better tires.

Whatever you decide on, test drive them a bunch at the store and try to fold them up.  Make sure they fit in your trunk.  :)

  • We went with the Bertini Valencia travel system. I like that the car seat goes from 4-34 lbs and it wasn't much more for the whole set (we got it on a great sale) than most car seats individually.

  • We went with the Chicco Keyfit 30 travel system.  I loved it.  We only recently got a new carseat due to height issues. Maya is 15 months and still rear facing- she is under 20lbs.

We ended up getting a year + out of the Chicco carseat.

It all depends on your lifestyle too, think about what you would use a stroller for in you life.

On the otherhand, I went with a Trekker carrier- love it!  I have a Moby too, but apparently I am not smart enough to figure out how to use it ;)

  • We LOVE our travel system, I'd never go another route. She is almost 1, and is a BIG lady, and we have no problem with her stroller...we use it everywhere we go, it's lightweight and easy to get in and out of the trunk, it's perfect. We'll be using it for a while yet. Since she was big, she outgrew the infant carrier part of the system around 6/7 months, so we had to switch her to a convertible carseat, but the carrier was super lightweight as well.
