Augmentin and teeth staining, anyone?

Anyone else have problems with augmentin staining your DC's teeth?!  How did you remove the staining?

Practically overnight, DS's teeth look like they've never seen a toothbrush - nasty yellowish brown staining :(  He just went to the dentist two weeks ago (sadly, the day after he started the augmentin!), and they were all pretty and white, so I know it's not a hygiene issue.

I'm going to call his dentist, but just curious if others have had this problem and HOW you removed the staining?  Google says it's a rare side effect... ugh.

  • I've never experienced it myself with my kids or the kids I treat (I'm a dental hygienist), but I think it can be a temporary side effect.  Is he done with the rx?  If so, The staining should lighten up as you keep brushing.  If not and if it still is pretty noticeable, I would call your DDS and take him in.  It would only take 30 seconds to do a quick polish and I don't think most dentists would charge beyond an office visit, which your insurance should cover.

  • Oh, and maybe you can try a more abrasive paste to brush with?  Like mixing baking soda with water?  I wouldn't recommend it for normal use, but in this instance, he'll be fine and it may work better than traditional toothpaste.

  • Thanks - will try the baking soda, then head back to the dentist if it doesn't come off in a week or so of home tx :)
  • I didn't know this, but that would explain why DDs teeth suddenly look yellow after coming off a round of Aumentin last week! I couldn't figure out why it all of a suddenly looked like we've never taken care of her teeth! Guess that explains that....

    Thanks.

I did find this one bit of info that seemed to confirm that it can be a rare side effect from the med (look under side-effects). So frustrating! :(

  • She was on an adult dose too, maybe that's why it had such a profound effect? Guess we'll get to scrubbing! Princess toothpaste just isn't going to cut it, huh?
