Wait until the baby comes--sometimes they pick their own nn...ex. my daughter's name is Amelia but we call her Mew cuz when she was first born she didnt cry, she mewed like a kitten.....the name just stuck. My nephew, Jared, is Juju....it's something he called himself. I actually get a laugh out of people trying to pick a nn for a child that isn't even here yet...imo nn are something that grows from the child.

I think there's a huge difference between a nn like Mew and using one of the classic NNs as the name you always use. #1 is John, called Jack, and we've never had any problem getting his school, his dr, or any place to recognize Jack as his real name. I'm guessing you don't use Mew everywhere you go.
We like old-fashioned names, with proper NNs, and consider the NN to be the real, day-to-day name. We want to pick it out in advance because that's what we'll always call her, even before she is born. Of course, she'll get a few other fun names along the way, but Elizabeth Louise will always be Libby (or whatever we pick) to us.

Even though they're very popular, my favorite nn's for Elizabeth are Elle/Ella/Ellie.
I think you absolutely need to "assign" a nn if you want one though. I know 5-6 Elizabeths and they are all called Liz, Beth, etc. but not always because they're parent's picked it, because friends at school just shortened the name.
Re: We've decided on our girl name!
Beth, Bethy, Liz, Lizzy, Liza, Elly
I like just plain ol' Liz, myself.

Cute. I like Liz
Libby is the only NN for Elizabeth that I like. Lizzie is cute for a little girl, but I can't stand Liz or Beth.
It's a pretty name!

Beautiful name!
Beth is my favorite nn, but I'm a huge fan of using Elizabeth with no nn. ?
