What do you think of this, re:car seats?

I know this is a personal opinion, but I'm asking because sometimes I don't think of every situation when planning, and having your opinions will help me to think of that.

Situation: A close friend of a close friend (make sense?) just offered us a Graco SnugRider (which is what we planned on registering for). It has only been used for one baby from what I understand so it is fairly new. I'm getting all the details soon....I sent a follow up email for more information from her.

Do you think I should take it? If you think about it, when you have kids within two years apart, most people use the same infant seat, and this is newer than that even. Oh, its also never been in an accident. Plus, they'll even give me the extra base for it so we won't even have to buy a second base.

  • If you trust them and it is in good condition I would.

  • as long as you trust that its never been in an accident (even a minor one) then I dont see a problem at all.

were reusing our graco safe seat for baby #2, the expiration is 2011 & its in perfect condition. the carseat guidelines & safety features havent changed since I bough it, so thats what matters to me.

    this

  • I've been doing a lot of research on these lately.  The SnugRide looks like a really great seat worth about $125, plus another $50 for the second base.

It'd be real tempting to get a travel system or something that 'grows' with your child, but "all in one" devices never do as good a job at each thing as a device dedicated to one use.  That means to get "the best" infant seat, car seat, etc, you will probably have to buy one for every stage of development.  That's a lot of $$.

Think about the reason they are giving you such a "new" carseat - because their darling child grows up and out of an infant car seat so fast.  Do you really want to shell out nearly $200 for something that they will grow out of so fast?

I'd say if someone wants to give you one, take it with profuse gratitude.

Well said, Man of the Board....I was just wondering yesterday if you were still around...

  • if you know that it has never been in an accident and it has all the parts and the instruction book then I think it is fine.  We are reusing the one from DD it hasn't expired yet.
  • If you KNOW it hasn't been in an accident then I would say it's ok. I don't think I would personally do it but I'm just really anal about stuff like that.
  • I would check the back of the car seat for the expiration date just to be sure it's still good.  Otherwise, go for it.

Thank you for the advice :)  I was mainly worried about the car seat safety. Although it would be great to get for free, I want it to be as safe as possible and if that means I have to buy a new one, then I'm buying a new one. A car is unsafe enough, so I'd like some reassurance that baby will be as safe as I can make it.

  • If you trust them that it has never been in an accident (even going 10-15mph) then yes use it. personally its not something I would risk.
