Probiotics for babies?

DS has been on and off antibiotics again. He is 10 months old.  They are really doing a number on his digestive system and he has a ton of diarrhea. He is also teething.

Can I give him probiotics this young? If so, where do I get and what kind? I feel so sorry for his little tush!!!

Re: Probiotics for babies?

  • I'm pretty sure I gave DS1 probiotics at that age.  I got them at Whole Foods.  Don't recall the name but it is in a yellow bottle and in the refrigerated section in the vitamin area.  It is a powder and you only give 1/2tsp a day.

  • Our pedi recommended Culturelle for DS at around 2 months.  He was very gassy and cried for most of the first three months.  We started out giving it to him once a day and now we're down to once a week.  Ask your doctor about it.  Places I've seen it: Walgreens- about $28 for 30 packets, Target- sometimes it's on sale for $24, and the cheapest is Drugstore.com for about $20 (plus it qualified for free shipping!).
  • DD had this problem when she was constantly on antibiotics for recurring ear infections.  The doctor told us to use Florastor (not sure of the spelling).  My husband got it, I think he had to ask the pharmacist and get it from behind the counter.  It was pricey and came in packets to put in her bottle.  GL!
  • We use Udo's Choice for infants and give it to DD daily. She has terrible gas and this has seemed to help the most.
  • We have used biogia (I could only find it at Walmart -the pharmacist ordered it for me, but it may be at Whole Foods)...and florastar packets. I think they worked wonderfully for gas and general new tummy upsets!
