need help post baby shower re: newborn clothing

I had my baby shower on Sunday, which was fabulous.  The girls got a tonofshit.  :)

However, we didn't get one single pack of diapers (!!!) and I got 2 packs of newborn onesies and two cotton pants for each girl.  That is all I have in the way of newborn clothing at this point.  (I do have some 0-3 from Gymboree that I bought awhile back, though.)

How much newborn clothing do I need?  What types of things should I get?  How long did your babies wear newborn stuff?

Thanks for any advive.  I am off to the doctor, but will check back when I get home!

  • it's really SO hard to know how long they will be in newborn- all has to do with how much they weigh at birth, how well they eat, etc.  But having twins = a chance that they will be early and smaller - so you'll need a decent stash of newborn stuff.  If you have a carters store near you they are GREAT about returns even without receipts- so you could buy a stash there and then return them if you don't need them (just don't wash too much ahead of time!).

my guys were not in newborn for long. I even had a few preemie outfits for them just in case --- they wore them the first week they were home- and then grew out of them.  They were not preemies - but they still fit them in that first week - instead of being really big like newborn and 0-3mo clothing would have been.

  • i was wondering the same thing.  i only bought a few newborn outfits.  i figure i'd rather have the clothes be a little big and last longer than a few weeks.

  • I can only speak from my personal experience, but DS was born at 37w5d (7lb 1oz) and was in preemie stuff for 2w, then in NB for another 2w.  He fit into 0-3m when he was 1m (so 2w after his EDD).  I wouldn't worry too much about outfits, just stock up on sleepers IMO.
  • DD was 9 lbs at birth, and wore NB clothes for a week.  I know the twins will be smaller just by the virtue of being twins.

Either way, I don't intend to have many outfits.  DD spent all of her early days in sleepers, and that's what I intend to do for the twins as well.

I second the recommendation for Carters - they're clothes are soft & comfy, and they're great about returns.

  • My kids were 5lbs 1 ounce when born and we skipped the preemie stuff. They wore newborns up until 2 months, I bought the cutesy outfits and I had to pack away clothes with tags still on them. I would stick with onesies and PJs, we did so many wardrobe changes between spit up and newborn poop.

  • Thanks! We have a Carters Outlet down the street and I was planning to go today. I am not really looking for cutesy outfits, but stuff that will be practical like sleepers. Good to know they are good about returns! I just can't believe we didn't get anything at the shower! I envisioned having way too much newborn stuff!

  • My girls are 3 weeks old and I find long sleeved onesies (to put on under their outfit, full-cover jammies (with footies), and newborn gowns are the things I use the most. The outfit They are about 5 &1/2 pounds each, so I use newborn sizes right now; 0-3 months are WAY too big.
