Scared about bleeding - Sorry if TMI

Hi all,

I think I'm 5 weeks 5 days today and I have been spotting light brown for about a week.  Last night I went to the bathroom and noticed a gush of dark brown/red in the toilet.  I yelled for my DH and he looked at it too.  I put on a pad and we went to bed thinking I was having a miscarriage.  I barely slept all night.

This morning I woke up thinking it would be worse but it seems to have tapered off into the brown spotting again.  It's dark brown.  I called my RE and I'm scheduled for an ultrasound on Friday anyway.  He thinks I may have a hematoma.  He thinks we should watch it and if I have any cramping or clots or if the bleeding gets heavy, I should call and come in but otherwise wait for Friday.  I haven't had clots or cramps, just spotting.

What do you guys think?  Anyone go through something similar?  I've been googling and it seems like there are mixed stories - positive and negative.  I just need to try to hang in there until Friday morning.  It's so hard.

  • My OB says that I have a hematoma and basically its just a bruise from where the embryo implanted into the uterine wall and whenever the baby shifts I will have some spotting because the old blood is being released. I haven't had any red blood though. I would try to stay positive even though I know its hard. Relax and try to keep your feet up. Good luck!

  • First off, if you thought you were miscarrying, why on earth did you just "put on a pad and go to bed"?? You seriously should have called your OB, Doc, or went straight to the ER. If you WEREN'T having a miscarriage you could have seriously caused damage to not only the baby, but yourself, because the bleeding could have been caused by something serious. Not trying to lecture you, but if something like this happens again, PLEASE, call your doctor or go to the ER right away and make sure you and your baby are ok.

Maybe it was stupid of me not to go to the ER, but this was at 9:30 at night and I thought I'd wait until the morning to call my doctor.  I've had no cramps, no heavy bleeding.  Just the gush in the toilet and what seemed like a light flow for probably 30 minutes after when I decided to go to bed.  I've had a miscarriage before, and went right to the ER as soon as I saw red blood.  They weren't able to do anything for me.  They hooked my up to an IV and said that early pregnancy is a mystery so if I'm having a miscarriage, they can't do anything to stop it.  So that's why I didn't go to the ER this time.

  • I have a hematoma. They are actually kinda common. I've had red and brown blood. Try to stay positive!

  • Ok, I completely understand. It's just, I've had a close friend go through something similar and it didn't end too great. She was a first time mom and she had a similar situation. She didn't go to the doc and didn't call, she figured she'd "wait". I don't remember all the details but basically, she lost her baby because she waited. Had she taken action right then, she wouldn't have lost it and that's exactly what the OB  told her...so I wasn't trying to be rude or mean, I'm just looking out for the best interest of you and your baby. But in the end, it's you, and you know your body better than anyone on here. Good luck and hopefully it doesn't happen to you again...

it wasnt stupid of you NOT to go to the ER your under the care of an RE they more than likely would have told you not to go.  Unless certain symptoms arose.   plus if your m/c at 5 weeks there is NOTHING anyone can do to fix it.  You did the right you lied and down and relaxed.  I had the same thing happen with  my last pregnancy it was a hematoma.  VERY rarely do they ever cause a m/c its just a very scary situation and more common then we probably know.

  • Thanks Robyn and everyone for your replies.  I'm just trying to tread water until Friday morning.  My RE said that emotionally this is tough, but the baby is probably OK.  I just wish I could fast-forward time a couple of months past these scary first weeks!

Whoa. Are you a doctor? Everyone has to rush to the ER if they have spotting? I don't think so. She did the right thing.

  • the same thing happened to me (it sounds like) on thanksgiving day.  i was between eight and nine weeks and had three huge gushes of blood.  i'm talking a lot of blood - fill the toilet and two pads blood.  i went to bed convinced it was a miscarriage and said i'd head to the ER if cramps got so bad i couldn't stand it.  but things tapered off.  the next day, the doc sent me to get an ultrasound in advance of what we thought would be a d&c.  they found the baby with a strong heartbeat and said that it was a blood clot (hematoma).  i've been spotting since then, but we've seen the hb on an ultrasound one more time and i have another doctor appointment tomorrow and ultrasound friday.  try to hang in there, and good luck!
  • I had the same thing at six weeks and was sure it was a miscarriage.  Went to the ER expecting a loss and instead saw baby's heart beat :-)  My OB said bleeding like this is common.  They can't ever call it "normal" but it happens a lot.  They'll likely just do an ultrasound to locate the source of the bleeding and then check on it regularly until it's all resolved.  Hang in there! :-)
