Hi everyone,
We visited the NICU yesterday in anticipation of having twin preemies (32 or 34 weeks). The trip was good and well worth it, especially the conversation with the pediatrician on outcomes for different gestational ages and birth weights. The nurses all carry these cards in their pockets. Just thought I would share:

All numbers are for all babies, not just twins. Numbers are given as # per 1,000 - so if it says "982" that means "982 out each 1,000 survived. You can read that as a percentage also "98.2%"
The chart titled "Survival with severe IVH or ROP... " means survival without severe problems essentially. IVH is intraventricular hemorage - brain bleeds - which can lead to a lot of other serious issues. ROP is retinopathy of prematurity, which are severe eye issues.
I am not trying to scare anyone, but since most twins (50%!!) are born prematurely, it is good to know the statistics. I found this chart more comforting than anything.
Also, most of us have to deal with a lot like reduced activity, bedrest, etc to get our babies here safely. Just seeing this can help you feel that the extra steps you are going through - and the extra nonsense we hear from "friends, family and strangers" is worth it.
