I just used my blender (and sometimes the food processor) and so far so good. I would either steam (on the stove with a steamer basket) or bake whatever I was making and then blend with a little bit of the cooking liquid. Then I would freeze in ice cube trays and when frozen, pop out and put in ziplock bags.
I made 80% of the purees I used in one big day of cooking. Had I bought a babycook it would have been a total waste of money. I do already have more kitchen stuff than one person needs though. I used my food processor for most of it, but also a manual food mill.
It isn't about being 'worth buying' - but do you 'have' to have it. The answer is no, you don't have to have it. You can use other means to steam and puree.
However, I love mine because 1) it's one little machine for both steaming and pureeing, 2) it is quick and easy to clean.
I wouldn't spend money on something just to make baby food. DD ate purees for 3 months and then was on to finger foods. I used a steamer basket, baking dish, large food pro, small food pro and strainer. If you're going to spend money on something, get a food pro that you can use for other things once you're done with baby food.

This. DD just strted veggies 2 weeks ago. She seems to prefer her foods a little thicker and I don't think it will be long before I can just give her (some) finger foods. I pureed 1 butternut squash and it lasted 10 days ( like pp said, put into ice cube trays). I just use my little food processor.
