Water Birth

Have any of you had a water birth - or are you considering it?

I've always been fascinated by the idea. I had a few friends do homebirths this way. homebirth isn't an option (medically) for me, but I'm hoping waterbirth still is... are there any limitations on it for people?

Re: Water Birth

  • I don't know much about it, but when I mentioned it to my ex-friend, she explained how gross it was and how she does not want to swim around in her placenta. She's a total biitch though. I was watching a water birth on TV and was amazed.

  • I would like to labor in the water. I'm not sure on giving birth there though, it just seems to me that the water would wash away any lubrication.

  • It is definitely a personal decision.  I find it gross.  As beautiful giving birth is, it sure is messy and I wouldn't want to be sitting in a big tub full of water and my own fluids.
  • I plan to labor in the water. There is lots of research showing that it can help relax you & help the birthing process. I don not plan to give actual birth in the tub though. NMS.

  • I don't think it's for me either. I watched it on tv once and when the nurse got out the fish net during labor to start grabbing all the floaters I was gone. lol.... ewww

  • I've always been open to it, but my hospitals have never provided water births. With my second they did have a big labor tub/jacuzzi, but I never made it in as I was "stuck" on the birthing ball :)

My DH is also on the side of finding it gross to be sitting in all of those fluids and stuff... :)

  • I had a water birth and it was amazing. It definitely helped me to relax, my contractions slowed down but they were still intense. I think I was just more relaxed and calm and I felt like my contractions were really efficient, if that makes sense.

As far as sitting in your own fluids, my DD was born and I was in the tub for only a couple of minutes afterwards, so I wasn't "sitting in my own fluids". It's not half as bad/gross as some of you may think it is. I guess I just feel like labor isn't glamorous whether you're in the water or not and i'd rather have a calm and relaxing labor/birth then worry about the 2-3 minutes i'm in the tub with some blood/fluid.

Oh and I didn't push my placenta out in the tub either.

Anyways, loved my water birth and I have every intention of doing it again and again! =)

  • its the fluids that worry me. I'd really like to do labor in water since I can't walk and don't want to just sit there through it. :/

  • If I can, I would love to have a water birth. It just depends on my options at the hospital. I definitely plan on laboring in the tub.
  • I wanted a water birth, but only labored in it and it wasn't for me and I spent most of my time standing in the shower.  I think the water was too warm for me and I wasn't patient enough for it to cool off.  If you are unable to stand I think it would be a great way to take pressure off your body while being able to change positions and help the baby descend.  A lot easier to go from being on your back to on your knees (you can even just rest your arms on the side of the tub).
  • I am definityl considering a water birth as well.  So many people say its gross but those people have never done it.  It seems like the people who have, loved it and said it really wasn't to gross.  I have also heard that it gives you alot more privacy because you are submerged in the water.  I like that idea!
