what are some reasons you would get a u/s in 3rd tri? my OB said that my 20 week ultrasound would be the last in case they needed to check anything out. now i'm wondering what that "anything" is!
weird, i'm getting one at 32 weeks to check on amniotic fluid, how big the baby is, what position she's in, etc... i haven't had an u/s since 15 weeks (it was the "big" u/s, my ob was able to do it earlier than 18 weeks for some reason)
My LO is BIG and I've got GD. Because of this I've been having weekly ultrasounds for a month now to check my amniotic fluid. The "anything" might be if your doctor suspects a problem or is concerned about size or position.
I have to get one tomorrow. At my last regular checkup I was measuring ahead, so they're doing one to see exactly how far ahead I'm measuring and probably checking the position of our baby! My doc said its nothing to be worried about, but measuring ahead is a great way to get another look at your baby LOL.

I have one scheduled for tomorrow because I have been consistently measuring 4 wks ahead and they want to check on the size of LO. I guess they always do a "quick" check at the 36 wk apt just to make sure LO is head down also.

I had one at 34 wks and ob wrote it was for measuring large for dates that way my insurance would cover it;-) I really wanted to see him. Good thing I got it done b/c they found some fluid in his kidneys. So I had to go back for a f/u ultrasound the next week. There still was some fluid in his kidneys( means there could be a blockage from kidneys to ureters so urine isn able to completely drain) but this time I guess the amount wasn't significant. Hopefully everything will be ok when he comes out.
1. I have a follow-up this week to see my placenta -- it was anterior and low-lying on my 21-week, so it has to be checked.
2. Meanwhile, I have GD, so I'll have another in the regular office around 36 weeks to see his size and amniotic fluid volume, and the health of the placenta.
3. Then, also b/c of the GD, likely a quickie growth evaluation one in the office every week until my due date (or until HIS due date, if he gets to big or distressed to wait til 40 weeks).
I had a follow up ultrasound scheduled after my 20 week because they couldn't get a good view of the spine. Everything was fine but they just wanted to make sure.
I had an ultrasound at 28 weeks b/c my anatomy scan revealed a marginal cord insertion (umbilical cord is attached at edge of placenta instead of the center). They wanted to make sure she was growing and getting enough nutrients, etc. All looked fine, so I'm not supposed to have any more.
I had one at 36 weeks with my Non-Stress Test. The OB scheduled a NST at a time LO usually sleeps and they could not keep her awake long enough to get the data they needed so I was told to eat a candy bar on the way to the hospital for another NST and an ultrasound.
It's not scheduled yet, but I think I'll get one in a few weeks to check on the low lying placenta and the baby position - LO was in transverse breech at the last u/s.
Re: reasons to get ultrasound in 3rd tri?
if you develop a complication
I had a growth u/s in 3rd tri after being diagnosed with GD.
My placenta is low lying. They keep checking to see if it's moved.
But that was diagnosed at my 20 week ultrasound, so it wouldn't be something that would develop now.
After the anatomy scan (gender u/s) I had:
1. after I fell and landed on my bump (admitted to L&D)
2. during follow up with high risk doc to make sure placenta moved to correct position
3. size and weight b/c DH and I were very large babies and OB would not recommend vaginal delivery for a baby that size considering my size
4. bio physical after some bleeding and decreased movement- helped to decide how risky induction / c-section would be at this point (admitted to L&D)
No news is often good news and I know my insurance will not cover u/s beyond the anatomy scan unless there is a medical concern requiring one.

I'm sure this has been said, but mostly to check growth.
I've had three ultrasounds in the third trimester due to GD. Making sure she isn't too big and that she's developing as she should.
~after 34 cycles we finally got our 2nd little bundle of joy~

My IF blog
My OB practice routinely does 33/34 week ultrasounds for a growth check. I'm having another next week at 36w to check LO's position (he's breech now).
