My husband and I went to the hospital last night after feeling what I thought were gas pains. It turns out I was 4 cm dilated and the gas pains, which were mild and irregular, were not gas pains but contractions. I am currently being monitored at a wonderful hospital with a world class nicu (in Boston). i've received the steriod shot for the lungs and i am currently receiving mangeseum sulfate to stop the contractions (they are about 1 ever hour right now). So, having reduced the contractions and stopped the dilatiation at 4 cm, I'm wondering if anyone has any similar stories about how long they stayed in this condition.
Thanks.
Re: 32 weeks; 4 cm dilated, 70% effaced
I didn't have quite the same experience as you. My water suddenly broke in the middle of the night at 32 weeks. When I got the L&D, I was 8-9cm dilated, so DS had to be delivered by c-section (breech). But I can tell you that 32+ weekers usually do really well in the NICU. DS will be 12 months next week and is a nicely chunky boy (95%) and is doing thing according to his actual or adjusted age, for the most part.

I went into L&D around 30 weeks with bad lower back pain and spotting. Turns out I was 75% effaced and dilated 2.5 cm. They didnt see any contractions, but they gave me the steroid shots and kept me on monitors. They gave me a FFN test, which came back positive. I stayed in the hospital on bedrest for 10 days - with no contractions being picked up but continued back pain. I was on procardia the whole time, which is supposed to stop contractions.
They were about to send me home on bedrest - they checked me again and I was still the same - and then all of a sudden the pain got worse. I went to 7 cm in the next hour, and delivered my DD an hour later at exactly 32 weeks. She was 3 lbs 15 oz.
She stayed in the NICU for 25 days - it was tough, but she did well, she just needed to grow. We've been home for about 2 months now, and she's doing great - a little over 8 lbs now.
We still don't know why I went into early labor. It's scary knowing you might deliver early, but after 32 weeks (and with the steroid shots) you have a very good chance that the baby will just need to do some growing before they can come home.
Good luck!
Stay inside baby!!
