Pregnant after a Loss

What to do after 2 early m/c

I've had 2 miscarriages at around 6.5 weeks and am considering going to an RE for tests.  Both were natural m/c so I have not had the "products of conception" (as my dr. says) tested for chromosomal abnormalities.

Also, my dr did give me the ok to take 1 baby aspirin everyday when I get pg again.  I haven't been tested for a blood clotting disorder but she said it is safe to take it as a preventative measure.

I'm torn whether to start trying again and take the baby aspirin every day or go get the testing done.  What did you do at this point?  Did you try again in hopes of a sticky baby the 3rd time?  TIA!

Re: What to do after 2 early m/c

  • I just wanted to say I'm sorry for your losses.  My sister had 3 m/c before having a healthy baby - they never knew why - so frustrating and heartbreaking.

I wish you lots of luck w/#3 :-)

  • Does your insurance cover any testing? A lot of insurance policies will only cover testing after 3 or more losses. Unfortunate as it is, they still consider 2 losses "bad luck," which it can be for a lot of women. If it were me, I would find out what insurance covers. If they cover it, I'd get the testing. If not, I'd take the aspirin and try again. I'm so sorry that you've been through this twice. I hope third time's the charm!

That's a great idea.  I'll call my insurance and find out what they will/will not cover first.  And thanks so much for the encouragement.

  • I had two losses before my BFP.  After the second loss, my midwife referred me to an RE. I checked with my insurance before going to the appointment. My insurance covered the initial consult which I found very beneficial. My insurance also covered the bloodwork that he ordered for me.

Because I had a d&c with the second loss, we were able to tell what caused the m/c (it was trisomy 21 I believe) and the RE thought that was caused by my eggs being "old" - I had a problem ovulating late in my cycle. He put me on Clomid and told me to take a baby asprin each day. It helped!

If your insurance covers it, go and talk to the RE and see what type of testing he would do and take that to your insurance co. to see what they will cover, then talk it over with your DH. Had our course of action not worked we were prepared to, both mentally, emotionally and financially, to make our decision with the next round of treatment.

    Good luck!

  • I'm so sorry for your losses, but hope to see you here soon! My ob referred me to an RE after my 2nd loss. They did a bunch of blood work and a HSG and pretty much found nothing that was directly related to my m/c's. Shortly after the testing I got pg for the 3rd time. My RE monitored the pg. I was going in weekly for betas & u/s, but we lost that one also.

Basically in my case, they didn't find anything signifcant, but I like that they do such early monitoring. I think I'd go crazy if I had to wait till 8-10 weeks to go for my 1st u/s now! HTH & GL!

Thanks so much, this was very helpful to me.  I guess it wouldn't hurt to go to the initial consult and see what she has to say.  On one hand I feel like I need answers but on the other hand I'm not sure I'm ready for the RE to tell me there's something wrong with me.  Congrats on your baby!

  • I'm sorry you're going through this. I too had 2 early losses. With the 2nd pg I had switched OBs but after that loss he agreed to do the RPL testing. My first OB had told me I would have to have 3 before she would test me. Anyway, I found out I have a clotting issue but my OB wasn't convinced it was the reason for my loss as clotting causes later losses than mine. Regardless he did put me on baby aspirin immediately. We were going to do the HSG next but I got pregnant by surprise. He then put me on progesterone supplements as a precaution during the first trimester. This third time has been my charm so far. I would say try the baby aspirin if you think you're ready to try again. I'm not sure what I would've done about trying again had I needed to make a choice. Good luck with whatever you decide.

That's good that they didn't find anything that would have triggered your miscarriages.  I couldn't imagine waiting until 10 weeks for an u/s either.  I definitely want to be monitored more closely next time.  Congrats on your pregnancy!  :::Sending you lots of sticky baby dust:::

Congrats on your pregnancy!  I wanted to ask my OB if she could do the testing instead of sending me to the RE but I didn't.  Definitely going to take the baby aspirin next time.  At this point I'll try anything.

  • I'm sorry for your losses as well.  I would get the testing done - it can only help clarify if there is a diagnosis they can find.  If they do, there are treatments :).
  • I am so sorry for your losses.  Like pp said, if insurance will cover it now I would have some testing done.  If they do find a cause, they could also treat you.  If it is not covered yet, I would probably take the baby aspirin.  I hope to see you here soon with a sticky baby!!

  • I went to an RE and we both did genetic testing, I had an hsg, dh has a semen analysis. I didn't do the clotting tests. my first m/c was a genetic problem (random fluke). Anyway all was fine. That gave me the comfort and strength to try again. Not that a 3rd couldn't happen but at least I was aware that it had nothing to do with our genetics. Sorry for your losses and good luck to you! ETA: my OB offered to run the bloodwork for clotting and genetic testing. But, I wanted to go to a specialist. I'm sure your ob can to. Its just bloodwork.
