I used to get so many compliments on my boxed color back when I was in school. Way more than I get from on my insanely expensive salon job now, hmm.... It only works well if you're going for a darker color though, IMO.
ETA: Lol, pp and I have totally different opinions I never attempted at home highlights, only going darker. My hair is a medium brown naturally though.

as I fellow blonde I say it is worth the salon trips. I tried box..I hated it. Can you just go back to a more natural blonde w/ out highlights. I did this during my pregnancy and only had to get touch ups every 3 months instead of every 2.
I'm a hair stylist and of course will not recommend you using a box. What if you mess it up or don't like the color? Getting it fixed will end up costing you more. If you're on a tight budget though beauty schools are usually a safe bet. They're cheaper and more eager to please.

samesies. but you gotta trust the student
unfortunately box color is harder to correct if it goes wrong .so it depends on what you wanna do- you going darker like a brown? then go a couple shades lighter than what you aim for. deep condition before hand so it goes on more evenly. i apply color to damp hair and comb through with a wide tooth comb.
