u/s and L&D questions (insurance related)

As I continue to struggle with whether or not to go on DH's insurance, I realized I could come to BOTB for some numbers. I know the data might be slightly skewed, but I'm trying to get a basic understanding of whether or not the money we'll save with DH's plan warrants spending the money on the premium. So, for all the moms:

How many ultrasounds did you have during your pregnancy (and were you high risk, etc)?

How much was the total bill for your labor and delivery (if you know)? Did you opt for meds? Was it a c-section or vaginal? etc.

Thanks!!!

Re: u/s and L&D questions (insurance related)

  • I've had 2 u/s so far with a 3rd scheduled for next week.  I'm skipping the NT scan.  I will have at least 9 u/s by the time the baby is born.  One each month.

    I am considered high risk.

    No idea on the delivery.

My insurance foots the bill for EVERYTHING.  We don't even have copays.  I believe it even covers the baby's first year.

    It is fabulous.

  • Normally my OB only does one u/s at 20 weeks. However, I had some bleeding early on and so I have had a total of 3 u/s.  Each cost somewhere between $500-$800 total (I pay 20% coinsurance)

Lab work alone total was probably somewhere between $1000 -1100 for routine bloodwork.

I haven't delivered yet, obviously so no help there.

ETA: Before coinsurance kicked in I had to meet a $600 deductible and pay a one time co pay of $30 for office visits.

  • Ok I don't know how much this will help but...

we've had 15 u/s throughout the pregnancy. Insurance has covered all of them in full as they were medically necessary (except the NT scan, but they cover that by default anyways).

My insurance covers all maternity related expenses (except prescription medications) 100% so there were no OB office fees or anything for us.

For hospital visits we have a $100 copay once our deductible is met so we had to shell out our deductible (which on Lovenox happened in the first month) and then it will be $100 when the baby is born but that's it.

If you are considering switching I would call and ask them exactly what they cover and what they do not cover. Find out if there is a set dollar amount for L&D copay or if you have to pay a percent of the overall costs- every insurance is different.

  • I had two u/s, one to confirm pg at 8 weeks and an anatomy u/s at 20 weeks.  Not sure what the total bill was, but we budgeted to have to pay the entire out-of-pocket ($3500) and ended up paying a little over $700 when it was all said and done.

Vaginal delivery with epidural.  The epi was the most expensive part - without insurance is was around $2600 or something like that.

  • oh - and I'm high risk and have had a ton of complications - normally we would have had 3-4 u/s.
  • I have not had a child, but I know my coverage. We don't pay for anything. If we had only one plan instead of 2, we'd pay 3000 oop max.
  • My SIL had no isurance and paid cash for everything (the same one doing the Dave Ramsey Stick out tongue) She had 3 ultrasounds to keep from spending too much, she said they were around $300 a piece. She had a VERY short hospital stay and a vaginal birth.  All in all she had to pay around $10,000 for EVERYTHING. She didn't do the NT scan.

ETA: She had and epidural and that alone was $1,500.

  • 4 total: NT scan, ER scan (after a bleeding scare), anatomy scan and one the day they induced.  I was not considered high risk.

I had a vaginal delivery (again, induced) I think when all was said and done, the total cost for my labor and delivery was approx $30K.  The epi alone was $5700.

ETA: 100% of my office visit copays we covered.  I did have to pay a copay for both times I was in the hopsital.

  • Your OB can give you a cost list of what they charge for anything and everything pregnancy related.  I know the more insurance the better.  Even if it is 20% not covered, that 20% for me JUST FOR the doctors fee for delivery/ prenatal care and all u/s and blood work is almost 700.
  • With all my complications about 85k was covered by insurance - we owe about 4k  :(

  • I had scott and white insurace...and I had 6 ultrasounds, vaginal birth, epi, a 5 day hospital stay and the baby was there for 7 days.  We paid $300 for doctors visits and $50 for being in the hospital.
  • I've already had 6 u/s and will have at least one a month.  All my doc visits are free (except the out-of-network ER, oi!) as are all diagnostic tests.  For delivery I pay a $200 copay.

  • Not sure how many ultrasounds I will end up with yet, nor what will happen with L&D, but I can say that I pay a $25 copay for office visits once and it covers all visits. I have a high deductable insurance, but after the deductable everything is covered. So the most I will pay is $2000, plus the $25 copay.

  • I have had 5 u/s so far. One was at a perinatologist and one was when I had to go to l&d. My ob requires payment for everything before 7 months and that cost was $850, and I had a $50 copay at the perinatologit. Insurance covered all of the u/s in that cost.

  • I had two us with my ob.  My ob charges were $8,000 - all of which was covered.  My hospital stay ( 4 days - induction, c-sect., anest., etc.) was another $7,000 - all of which was covered.  However, I was diagnosed with pre-e at 27 weeks - spent two weeks in the hosp. which was $35,000 - I was responsible for $2,000.  I also had to have bi-weekly bio-physical profiles from weeks 30 thru 36 which cost my co-pay every time.

Because Lilly was a month early I had NICU charges that were $2,000 which I had to pay $200 of.

  • I have had two ultrasounds so far, and have one more (at least) scheduled for my 20 week anatomy scan. I only have to pay one co-pay for the entire pregnancy/delivery - which was $20. So basically my total OOP cost will be $20.

  • The total cost for all my prenatal appts, 4 ultrasounds (2 were viability u/s due to multiple miscarriages), labor (incl. epidural), delivery (c-section), recovery (drugs, room for me & baby etc) was $33k.
