Does everyone get NT scans now?

The reason I ask is that when I was pregnant with DD three years ago, I remember that some posters got them, so the technology existed, but I don't feel like they were as common as they are today and my OB did not talk about them last time.  I'm just wondering if this has changed and I should expect this to be offered as the normal pregnancy screening this time around.

Re: Does everyone get NT scans now?

  • My doc's nurse acted like it's unheard of for a 26 y/o to get it. I asked her about it and she said they normally do it for mom's who are over a certain age. I will not be getting one obviously.

  • same here. I don't really remember even being asked. I was offered the option by my doctor at 5 wks (not to have it then but I was told it was something I could think about) and was never asked about it again.

I didn't have any scans or testing done for birth defects with my son and I won't be having them done this round either.

  • My doc started doing those rather than the 16 week quad screen or whatever the old bloodwork only test was...the NT scan is more accurate.

  • My doctor didnt mention it to me. When I asked her about she said at 27 years old with no family history she didn't feel it was neccessary. So needless to say I have to wait until week 14 to see my little one again no NT scan for me. However, I do agree it seems that many people posting on here are getting them done.
  • They offered it to me if I wanted it with DD, but it wasn't covered by my insurance since they don't consider it necessary at my age.  I did not have one then and more than likely won't have one this time.

  • Depends on the practice/doctor. Some will offer to every women, others will only offer to those in the risk pool. It also depends on your insurance, not all insurances will cover it unless it's necessary.

  • My doctor already mentioned it to me, but I'm in my 30s and my sister was born with a disability, so I'm higher risk.
  • My doctor didn't call anything an "NT scan" but she offered me what she called "1st Tri screening" where I get an u/s and blood test to test for Downs and Trisomy 18. I'm not sure if thats the same thing or not. I assume my insurance covers it b/c the entire pregnancy is not costing me anything.

  • My Dr. told me about it and I am 29.  She gave me information on it and told me at my first appt if we wanted it to call and schedule it with their person.  The pamphlet had the insurance codes so i could call my carrier to see if they would cover it and they do with no age restrictions so we are having it done.  If nothing else it's a chance to see LO again and give us some peace of mind no matter what.  We want to know what to expect, including possible disabilities.  Strangely enough in the UK it is standard at 12 weeks to get it.

  • They didn't offer it to me (I'm 23 - no neg. history). I requested it and scheduled it. I figure, since my insurance will cover the total cost of it, why not? Peek at baby 4 weeks sooner and well, the obvious reasons people get screening done.

  • The nurse mentioned it at my first appointment, but didn't say it was necessary for someone of my age with such low risk factors.  However, my insurance does cover the scan, and as long as I am able to use my insurance for that purpose, I will.  So my scan is scheduled for the last week in December.
  • My doctor told me not to waste my time.

Which is fine, because I wasn't going to get it anyway.
