Breastfeeding

??Breastfeeding after a Csection??

I have a question for you ladies.

I am having a scheduled c-section r/t having had an emergency csection in the past and my scar being too thin to risk a VBAC. I know I was in some pain after the birth of my daughter and was taking Percocet. She was in the NICU and only lived for 5 days so I was never able to breastfeed.

I am pregnant again and my question is....

Is it safe to take pain medications and breastfeed?

What did you all do?

If you did take pain medications-what did you take?

Did you find the baby to be more sleepy when you were on the pain medications?

I will definitely try to get off the pain meds as soon as possible but wonder whats the best thing.

Sorry for so many questions! Thanks in advance!

  • Is it safe to take pain medications and breastfeed? Yes.

What did you all do? I took what they gave me at the hospital during my recovery stay there.  They will give you a prescription for the same thing when you go home so you can continue pain meds.

If you did take pain medications-what did you take? I think it was Darvocet, but I can't remember.  It was one without codene, since I am allergic.  And I also took like 600 or 800 mg Ibupropen.  Both are safe while BF.

Did you find the baby to be more sleepy when you were on the pain medications? Nope.

  • I was given morphine right after my c/s and then percocet and ibuprofen.  A little passes into the BM, but not enough that it's dangerous.  I did not notice an effect on the baby.

  • First, I am so very sorry about the loss of your daughter...

    Second,

Is it safe to take pain medications and breastfeed? Yes...I don't think your doc would prescribe anything to you that isn't safe while breastfeeding, and if they do they would tell you.

What did you all do? I was on pain meds (Percocet) for the first three weeks...my incision opened and it was VERY painful!

If you did take pain medications-what did you take? Percocet and Tylenol (not together, but alternated doses towards the end)

Did you find the baby to be more sleepy when you were on the pain medications? Newborns sleep a lot to begin with, but I really didn't notice any negative effect on my LO.

  • Is it safe to take pain medications and breastfeed? YES

What did you all do? I took the pain med and still bf

If you did take pain medications-what did you take?  I took Lortab and 800 mg ibuprofen every 4 hours for probably 2 weeks.

Did you find the baby to be more sleepy when you were on the pain medications? I could not tell any difference when I stopped the pain meds.

  • Thanks a lot! I appreciate the info!

  • I am so incredibly sorry for the loss of your daughter. How devastating that must be for you. But, congratulations on expecting! Yes it's safe to take pain meds and bf. I was on percocet and ibuprofen after my c-section. I didn't take the percocet once I got home b/c it mostly made me sleepy. I can't say it made my dd more sleepy, but I didnt' like being sleepier than I already was!
  • I am sorry to hear about your loss.  But congrats on your 2nd!  I was prescribed Vicodin and Motrin after my C sect.  DS was very sleepy and I found that stopping the Vicodin made a difference ( I asked the pedi and he said I should stop it if I could handle it, since we were having trouble waking DS to eat).  The Vicodin was making me sick anyway. A few days later I stopped the Motrin too since I felt I could manage without it, and DS did seem to perk up more after that as well.  But that could be coincidence with him getting older too, I don't know.

  • I'm sorry for your loss. I can't imagine.

The other ladies answered the way I would. I took, and am still taking pain meds. They are safe for the baby. My rec is to take the pain meds on schedule until you feel you no longer need them. It's hard when you let the pain in.

What did you all do? Took the meds! LOL!!

If you did take pain medications-what did you take? They cave me Vicoden(sp?) and Motrin

Did you find the baby to be more sleepy when you were on the pain medications? No clue... I was on them the first 10 days and newborns sleep a lot

I will definitely try to get off the pain meds as soon as possible but wonder whats the best thing. Don't rush, they are safe and you just had major surgery. Take your time and recover a bit.

Sorry for so many questions! Thanks in advance!

  • I agree with all of the pp.I have had 2 C-sections and breatfed both of my girls. I have had Percocet and Motrin both times, and they are completely safe to take while breastfeeding. Just make sure your docs. Know you are planning to BF; they won't give you anything that isn't safe. And please don't be worried about how quickly you need to get off of them. A happy and pain-free mommy makes for a happy baby; let yourself physically heal. I repeat my sadness over the loss of your 1st LO. Many prayers and positive thoughts to you during the rest of this pregnancy.
