Zofran for morning sickness...

My doctor wont give me Zofran for my horrible morning sickness.  I had a different doctor with my 1st daughter and she gave it to me and it was a lifesaver!  But my new doctor wont and says it isnt safe....why would one doctor give it and the other wont?

Is anyone on Zofran?

Thanks!

Re: Zofran for morning sickness...

  • My doc started me out on Reglan at first, which helps to move the food out of your digestive tract faster so that it isn't sitting there and making me sick.  That worked really well for a while, and I had no side effects.  I read an article about it that the New England Journal of Medicine was recommending it as the first stop for nausea relief in early pregnancy, saying it was the safest of the anti-nausea drugs out there.

Unfortunately this did stop working for me at around 9 weeks and my doc switched me to Zofran. It works better for me now, but there is a risk of adverse side effects, mainly constipation and sleep disruption.  My doc advised that I when I take it I also do a dose of Miralax so that I don't get any more constipated than my already pregnant self would get.

    Good Luck!

  • Zofran is safe for pregnancy. The only reason it's category B is that there aren't a ton of studies of it during pregnancy, but thousands and thousands of women take it every year and there has never been a single case of birth defect connected to use of zofran. I have no clue why your 2nd doctor would say that unless he is so old school he won't let you take any meds during pregnancy. I took 35mg a day through a pump in my thigh for a huge portion of my last pregnancy and took it orally up until I delivered. I also took it during my first pregnancy at a more normal dose. Both my children are healthy. I trust my doctor completely and he never would have allowed me to take such a high dose of the medication if there was a risk.
