I had a friend who is out on materinty leave ask me today "What all have you all bought so far?" well the answer is nothing. This got me thinking..This is my first child so I have no clue when to start buying stuff and what kind of stuff should I buy now and what kind of stuff should I hold off on and hope that I get it at my shower. So I figured I would ask you ladies since most of you have more exp. with this then I do. TIA
Re: When did you start buying? What?
It is not uncommon to have not bought a thing at 13w! Lots of people are superstitious about that, plus you have plenty of time anyway.
There is not a time where you "need" to buy certain things, but I started about 20w. (We had gotten a crib as a gift about 14w but that was it until 20w.)
At 20w I just started looking @ coupons and seeing what I needed. This way I can get stuff when it's on sale and not be pressed for time. So far we only have the things we absolutely must have when baby comes - which is not a lot - like a car seat, crib sheets, a few newborn clothes, etc.
Something to keep in mind is that if you are ordering furniture it can take up to 8 weeks for delivery at some places, depending on where you order from. That would be the only time constraint I can think of!
I still haven't bought a thing. I have a few diapers that I got free at a baby show but that's it.
I know we need to buy eventually and we will, but I still have a good four months to go. We'll probably start seriously looking and purchasing things after Christmas.
We bought our crib, dresser, and glider before we found out the gender. The day we found out our LO was a little man, I bought like 10 outfits from Carter's and then went back out on Black Friday with a friend and bought a few more. The only other thing we've really purchased since then was our jogger. The only reason we did that is that Dh has a friend who works at ***'s Sporting Goods and gave us a friends and family coupon...the jogger was like 35% off or something when all was said and done. Babiesrus doesn't sell the jogger we wanted, so it made sense for us to get it on sale since we couldn't register for it.
Other than that, the only thing we are really concerned about getting before LO is here, is the car seat.
We bought the crib bedding. That's it. My MIL bought us a travel system and my parents are buying the crib. We've picked up a few outfits here and there.
I had an office shower last week, but I probably won't be having my family shower (my Mom and MIL are throwing it) until the end of Feb. We'll just buy whatever we still need after that.
Oh, I should say we're planning on buying the furniture/decorations for the nursery (dresser, rocker, organizers, paint, art etc). I have no idea when we'll do that. Probably soon after Christmas.

I'm 17weeks. My registry is almost complete. We aren't buying though, until after the shower in the hopes that we get everything we need from it...That way we won't have doubles of anything.
However....I did buy the Fisher Price 123 Sounds n Lights ball because it was so on sale Black Friday at Walmart. We have also been gifted a stuffed animal and the onesie that we wished we had bought when we were in Disney 5weeks before finding out we were expecting lol. We also plan to buy the baby one book before the shower because it is a little known book that we hold close to our hearts (we discovered it somehow at a public library last year. DH calles me his cuddle monster..monster for short...and this book is called "I Need My Monster" and its about a boy who can't sleep without his monster). But thats it until after the shower.
i didn't buy anything till after the big u/s @ 22 weeks when we found the sex, and that was paint the same day of our u/s. not that it mattered, cause we ended up geting something very gender neutral anyway (periwinkle). and i didn't buy anything else until after my shower @ 30 weeks.
we'll do the same exact thing this time around, except i'll probably shop much earlier for stuff we need since we won't be having another shower. and if it's a girl, i won't be able to keep myself from clothes shopping with all the great holiday deals that will be out there i'm sure.
My poor niece actually slept on a plastic baby bath. She was a bit of a premmie, was born on a holiday and mi sis is a procastinator so...
As for the Q, I'm almost weeks and have yet to buy the first thing.
My husband's parents were poor when they had him (at 18) so he slept in a dresser drawer. Crazy.
This. We have our travel system and that is it.
This is the same as us. We got married in June, and I moved 3,000 miles away from my closest relative/family - I do not expect any sort of a shower thrown by my MIL, even though she probably will. Even still, we live on an island in Alaska - shipping is OUTRAGEOUS (seriously, no exaggeration) so I don't expect much other than simple, little things from anyone who feels like blessing us with a gift. Even Wal-Mart (which is the only "chain store" aside from Safeway that we have here) won't ship site-to-store for free up here. That being said, the baby selection here is all of 2 aisles, mostly consisting of cups and bottles and that kind of stuff. No bedding, a few carseat choices, perhaps a stroller or two, no furniture, no mattresses...you get the idea.
So, our original plan was to purchase at least one "big item" per month so as to offset the costs for ourselves. Then we decided to just take the plunge and buy all the big items at one time, so as to not have to pay shipping costs more than once (yes, we had to dip into our savings to do this and not be super tight for our monthly budget, but our savings will be replenished over the next 4-5 months when we have nothing large left to purchase). So, at this point in time, we have purchased: crib, pack n' play, crib bedding, mattress, travel system, extra carseat base, bouncer, tub, some clothes, and a cloth diaper stash that will fit from nb to potty-trained with a few minor purchases once we figure out what truly works for us and what doesn't.
Ditto this. Unless you're a high risk pregnancy and expect your baby to come early a lot of stuff can wait until right before or even after baby. It depends on what your plans are. I don't plan on buying many clothes right now 1. because we're team green, and 2. because I'm waiting for spring garage sales to score cheap nice, gender neutral clothes. The key things baby needs when born are car seat, stroller/carrier, somewhere to sleep, minimal clothes, diapers and feeding supplies. So I'm focused on that stuff, if I don't get other things at my shower, I'll buy them on sale or when I need it.
