gestational diabetes question...meds...

I have a question for those who were/ are gestational diabetics and were put on glyburide...

They started me on 2.5 every am last week. It never really changed any of my numbers (usually between 100-110's after meals) except it did lower my fastings slightly (from low 100's to mid 90's) and raised my after dinner sugars to 120's area. So today they want me to start taking one with dinner too.

My question is this though... For almost a month I didn't really gain any weight (I had gained 40lb total prior to this), then today when I weighed at my appointment I gained 7 lbs! That is 7 lbs in one week and the only change has been taking the glyburide. I am really concerned about this because it seems very excessive to me. It didn't even dawn on me that I gained that much until after I got home.

Did anyone else experience this or something simliar?

  • I was on 1.25 in the morning and 2.5 in the evening. I didn't notice anything drastic in my weight but I stopped really paying attention. Your numbers sound decent to me. My fasting was always lingering in the 90s.

It could easily be fluid retention. Don't sweat it.

  • This happened to me but because of the GD. I was diagnosed at 28 weeks and was put on the diet right away and checking my blood 4x day, which is standard. I did not gain and ounce for 6 weeks this was because the GD diet was just too restrictive on calories. So they put me on glyburide so that I could take in more calories and start gaining weight again. It worked, the next week I had put on 5 lbs. I only ended up putting on a total of 45lbs. the entire time and delivered at 36 weeks and this was because I didn't gain anything for that 6 week period or I would have probably been at around 55lbs. total for the PG.

Also remember you are carrying trips. and this is point in your pregnancy that they are putting on more weight every week so I am not surprised you are up 7lbs. in one week. I am sure your docs are watching you closely and they will tell you when they think your weight gain is out of the norm. I know it is scary because they keep telling you GD can make the babies grow too much. I was concerned about this as well, and my girls only ended up being 4lbs. 14oz. and 4lbs. 15 oz at birth.

Piece of advice if no one has told you this, bring your testing supplies to the hospital with you at delivery. They are going to be giving you insulin by IV since you will not be able to eat during the deliver time at the hospital so they are going to check your blood sugar hourly and most hosptials do not carry the newer testing kits they use the old fashion kind because they are cheap since they buy the supplies in bulk. Let me tell you the old testing way really hurts the fingers. By the time I delivered I had little purple bruises on all 10 of my fingers from all the testing. The nurse asked me why I didn't bring my own because they would use mine if I had brought it and I told her no one had suggested it to me, so I didn't know to bring it.

Good luck with the rest of your pregnancy.
