Multiples

A bit of a mixed message from the peri yesterday

He asked how much I had gained and I told him 10 lbs...he said that was good.

Then, when talking about my risk factors he said I had very low body fat for  a multiples pregnancy.

Should I try to pork myself out or continue what I'm doing?

  • Dr. Luke's book recommends about a 20lb gain in the first 20 weeks - so you fatten up the babies as much as possible in case you go into labor early.  It's not always that easy to gain in the first 20w because many women experience nausea, etc.

i gained 19lbs in the first 20w... i tried REALLY hard and ate like crazy - mostly healthy stuff- lots of dairy and as much protein as i could stand (b/c it grossed me out early on).  My boys were big at birth - so i'm glad i did it.

it's not BAD if you don't gain a lot early on- but i would try to gain as much as you can in a healthy way.  Have you read Dr. Luke's book? It explains the weight gain in detail.

  • Definitely get Dr. Luke's book. Also add an ensure a day. My OB told me to do this early on and at my last u/s my babies were 8 oz each, which is ahead of the curve.  Since most food grosses me out, especially meat, I have been doing a scoop of protein powder, milk and a ensure all mixed up. Its very tasty and a good way to get tons of protein.

  • I would try to gain as much as you can now by increasing calcium and protein. I gained 24lbs by 20 weeks and am so glad I did. I now have gestational diabetes and have a very strict diet. Since starting it, I haven't gained any weight. I'm so grateful I gained 37lbs so far so I don't have to freak out that my weight gain has slowed. I'm pretty confident the babies can take what they need from me. Definitely check out Dr. Luke's book. She provides good guidelines and the reasons for them.
  • I have Dr. Luke's book and have read it.  I should probably add that I am only 4'11" so 10 lbs is actually a good amount for me.  I have been doing ensure and eating all the time, but just not gaining weight.  Perhaps my metabolism hasnt been told I'm pregnant?

  • I did a lot of independent research and read medical studies about this, in addition to discussing the weight gain goals with my MFM and reading Dr. Luke's book.  Everything I read says to try to gain weight up front.  Statistically, women that gain more weight up front in a multiple gestation pregnancy go on to carry their babies longer and the babies weigh more.  If I were you, I would increase my protein and fat intake significantly to try to gain more weight.  Plus, you are going to need the weight if you are planning to breast feed.  But then again, I'm not a doctor, so you have to do what is right for you...

  • I should add that I'm 5' tall and I gained 20 pounds by 20 weeks (a lot for my little frame).  My goal is 38-45 pounds by end of pregnancy. I expect that around 28-32 weeks, it will be difficult to get all the calories in and to gain weight because the babies will be taking up all of my abdomen.  So better gain now than regret it later.

  • Like pp said, Dr. Luke's book is great.  I followed it as best I could and was up 20lbs. at my 18w appt.  Luckily, I was spared the horrible nausea and m/s and could actually eat.

Just do the best you gain to keep gaining.  It really is beneficial for the babies.  My guys were 6lbs. 12oz. and 5lbs. 13oz. at birth and totally healthy.  It was worth it to take them home 3 days later with me.

FWIW, I snacked ALL day long.  Healthy snacks, but still something.  My co-workers laughed at me because I was always eating something.

This is me too! I am still at my pre-preg weight. I lost 10 pounds due to m/s but I gained back 10 so far. I am nervous for my 20 week appointment on Friday. I have gained barely 2 pounds in 3 weeks.

I eat ALL the time but it isnt registering. I am pretty active though. Maybe that is it for you?

  • Eat now. I'm actually tall but at 32 weeks I can't eat a big meal because I feel full very quickly. The more you can eat now, the better.

  • I am 5'2 and I am now at 29 weeks and have gained about 38lbs - its been nuts but each time I go my babies are measuring ahead in weight. I am going again tomorrow so I will see if that holds.  I would try your hardest to gain some more weight if you can.  I read somewhere that you can add carnation to your milk to get extra calories with nutrients and healthy snacks all day.  Ditto to the post about not being able to eat as much - I can only get in a little at a time
  • I had hyperamisis and lost 20 pounds when I had my twins.  I was in the hospital, on one of my many stays there, and was crying about not gaining weight and losing it insead.  They sent a nutritionist in to talk to me who said quality over quantity.  Because of the hyperamisis, I gained a total of positive 10 pounds when I had my twins at 32 weeks.  They were good sizes for their gestation.  I wouldn't stress youself over gaining the weight.  IMO, your body will gain what it needs to.
