3rd Trimester

Well I WAS Cool as a Cucumber...until now (how do I not freak out??)

Yesterday I had my weekly midwife appointment and I mentioned that in the days leading up to it, I had noticed extreme itching mainly on my hands and feet. I didn't think anything of it, but a friend suggested I mention it to the midwife. She had a bit of a concerned look on her face and mentioned something called Obstetric Cholestasis and said she would send me to the hospital to have some bloodwork done just in case and she would ring me Wednesday with the results. So I went there immediately following my appointment.

About 15 minutes ago I got a phone call from one of the community midwives at the hospital who said they wanted to check me further and monitor the baby for some time as well as possibly take some more bloods today, and could I get back to the hospital. I mentioned DH was at work and had the car, and she said if we were getting there after 5 to just head up to Triage. She said depending on what they saw when they monitored, they may want to discuss delivering me sooner than planned (mind you, I'm only just due Thursday).

I felt okay when I was talking to her, but then as soon as I hung up the phone it hit me out of nowhere and I started to have a bit of anxiety over the thought something could be wrong. The baby has been moving fine, and I've been really feeling fine...so it's just a scary thought.

I called DH and he's leaving work early so we can get there before 4pm and just go to the Day Assessment Unit rather than Triage hoping that the actual midwife who rang can see us personally. It's 1:30pm now and as much as I'm trying to stay calm about things it all has me a bit concerned as I haven't had ANY issues for the entire pregnancy.

How the hell can I just chill out?

  • Ugh I'm so sorry, I wish I had some good advice but I just wanted to say good luck and I'm sure everything is just fine (they just don't like to take any chances this late in the game I'm sure!)

  • Deep breaths.  Just wait for your DH to come home and take it one step at a time. It could turn out to be nothing at all, but at least you'll catch it early...and you are in good hands.

  • Good luck! Better to be overly cautious! Keep us posted. Try to relax in the meantime.

  • You're near the end... try to keep calm.  I have cholestasis - and like your MW said, at this point - since you're just about due anyway, they're just probably going to monitor you and induce a little early if they get any non-reassuring results.  Baby moving well is a very good sign that everything is fine.  Cholestasis is most problematic when it's UNDETECTED.  The fact that you and your providers are being cautious is good.

    Good luck!
