3rd Trimester

What has your doctor/MW said about high blood pressure?

Last week at my appointment, my blood pressure was 134/83 I believe. I know that this is not considered hypertensive, but it is actually pretty high for me because my blood pressure is usually around 115/75 or so. My MW wasn't too concerned and kind of brushed it off as no big deal unless it reached 140/90. What have your doctors or MWs said about this? I checked my blood pressure today and it was still high. I go back tomorrow, but I just wanted to hear some other experiences. I have been kind of nervous about this all week.

Re: What has your doctor/MW said about high blood pressure?

  • My Dr took it pretty seriously (I also had a pretty low BP usually).  It went up to 140/85 and they decided to induce (at 40 weeks), but sent me for a NST.  Henry didn't pass it so I got sent in for my induction that day (39w6d).

I ended up getting pre-e after delivering and was in the hospital a week after giving birth (this is not common, don't worry).

  • Mine has been in that range a few times in the office and I actually don't have low BP normally (usually right around 120/80). Still, I have had:

    a 24 hour urine collection

    NST on baby

    Blood work

    More frequent visits

    Monitoring BP at home

My OB's office doesn't mess around with pre-e, so they're pretty cautious.

  • I am having this same problem today.  My BP has been low (right at the bottom of the normal range) the entire pregnancy.  Today after lunch I checked it and it was 137/79, then an hour later I checked again and it was 142/83.  I called the dr office and they said to call them back if the bottom number went above 90 or if I started seeing dots or I had any swelling in my hands or face.  I've been checking it every hour and it is 144/77 and then 135/81.

  • My OB has not been overly concerned about my BP because I have no protein in my urine and I have little to no swelling.  Up until a week ago, my BP has been around 114/70 but at my last appointment it was 135/80.

My OB said it is normal for BP to rise towards the end of pregnancy.  She said they become concerned if I experience severe swelling and/or protein in my urine.  Also if the bottom number goes above 90.  I think I will start to monitor it at home though...just for peace of mind.

  • My experience is a little different since mine went high T the end of the 1st tri. I was told to come back to have it rechecked and it was still 140/90 and was then put on BP meds and have been almost this entire pregnancy. I was told it's not pre e but I am in a higher risk group now. Lucky me!!
  • Mine was running in the 140's/80's for my 28 week appt. I had to check BP daily and do a 24 hr urine collection and blood work. I also got put off work since my work can be stressful and I am on my feet for 12 hours at a time. Had to f/u in 2 weeks. Although tests were negative for pre-e, BP was still high so I will be on weekly appts with NST and growth U/S. I will also probably be repeating the 24 urine collections.
