why is he grunting and squirming?

What does it mean when LO is grunting and squirming?  He usually starts this at about 4 am and could continue on and off for hours, but doesn't actually wake up or cry.  What is this and does anyone know how I can stop it from happening?

Re: why is he grunting and squirming?

  • Gas or attempting to poo.

At least this is the case for my LO.

  • DD has started doing this in the middle of the night when she eats. She grunts and squirms, so I think she doesn't want the bottle, but when I take it out of her mouth she starts fussing. I have no idea what she's doing, but it's definitely frustrating at 3 o'clock in the morning lol!

  • My dd does this usually around the same time - she is usually working on some gas and a poop.  She has always done this since day one....

  • I think it might them having a growth spuirt, if its not gas, poop, hungry, or tired. My son has been doing this off and on since 5 am.  It's driving me nutts, cause he is not normally like this!

  • I have no clue.  It is so frustrating though!!  Noah grunts all of the time...and he isn't pooing because he only does this once a day!  Someone said to try a formula with rice in it so we tried Enfamil AR and it didn't change anything.  He still grunts.  I also tried propping him up a bit on a positioner and that didn't help...we have triedgas drops too and those don't help.  I guess I am just never going to get sleep!
  • oh yes, we are going through this. it's all night!!!  I talked to the ped. and it's gas. I give LO gripe water at last feeding at night and helps a bit.
  • That sounds very familiar to me!!! We started giving him Mylicon (sp?) since a couple of weeks ago and it made a difference! Pedi said to give  3ml before every other feeding. So I guess the problem had to be gas.
