Where does the base for the car seat go? DH installed ours over the weekend and he put it behind the passenger side. I told him I thought it went in the middle of the car, but we looked at the manual and it doesn't say where to install it at.
If your manual doesn't specify, it can go in any of the 3 seats. ?We installed ours on the passenger side because we had LATCH hookups there and not in the center. ?When we had it inspected by the police they said using a side seat with LATCH is every bit as safe as using the center seat is.
I liked having him on the side, anyway- much easier to lift in and out from that position.?

Depends on the car. If your car will accept it in the center position, that is technically the safest. I drive a Jeep Liberty and it can't be installed in the center. (Plus, with an older child in a booster seat, I couldn't even if it accepted it.)
As others have said, it depends on your car. It does not automatically go in the middle.
Not all cars have the latch system in the middle. And it is not safe to use the side latches to install a middle seat. You can of course use the seatbelt if the middle seat does not have latch.
Our car is not condusive to the seat being in the middle. We have a Versa and the middle seat is rounded and narrower than the car seat base. In our car, the seat is safer on the side.
