Nursing pjs for hospital?

Since I've been on "modified bed rest" I've been shopping for last minute items online....a lot. This weekend I spoke to a friend who paid $95 for a nursing pj set (which came with a matching baby gown) for when she was in the hospital. I think it might have come with a matching robe too.

Anyway, I think they are just beautiful, but how practical is this really? I expect to have a c-section so I'll be there for a few days, but don't you worry about bleeding on or ruining your hospital pjs? I can't find any pretty nursing pjs online for less than $60-$70.

What are you wearing? I'm considering just going to Target or Gap at this point. Help me ladies :)

Re: Nursing pjs for hospital?

  • With my vaginal birth, I wore a nursing pj top.  I'd planned on wearing the bottoms, but was in bed so much that I just kept my bottom half covered.  When I got up to walk around I'd put the pants on.  I don't know what everyone's talking about with bleeding all over stuff, I had one little blood spot that didn't stay on the pad and got on the bed.  I plan on doing the same thing this time (having a c/s though).

  • I couldn't even get up until 24 hours after the c-section, I think I showered 36 hours after the c section. I put on my clothes after that, I didn't bleed from the incension, I did have to change my pad ALOT to keep from bleeding through. I wore maternity yoga pants from Old Navy and either t shirts or maternity knit tops. I brought a robe and all that, but never used it. Just make sure whatever you get, that the nurses will still be able to draw blood without you having to take your top off.

  • I just wore scrub pants (or any sort of loose pajama pants would work as long as they sit on your waist...you don't want anything lower if you have a section) and nursing tanks from Target.  Even though it was January, I was still really warm.  DDs were also in the NICU and it was pretty toasty in there.  You could always just throw a basic robe over a tank if you're cold or want more coverage.

Yeah, those pjs are cute, but I can't imagine wearing anything that nice for quite a while!  My life for the last year has consisted of stuff you don't mind getting blood, milk, formula, spit up, snot, or drool on!  :-)

  • I can't imagine spending $95 on a set of PJs, when a nursing tank from target and some comfy yoga or sweatpants will work just as well.

FWIW, I wore mesh undies when I was in bed, and that was it on my bottom half.  I covered up with a sheet when needed, and put pants on to leave my room.  I really liked the nursing tanks, though.

  • I bought 2 gowns and a robe from Aimee (https://www.nursinggowns.com/), which I LOVE.  They were so comfy and not restricting.  I wore them in the hospital after my 2nd was born and didn't get any blood on them.  I wore them for a long time after he was born, and have been wearing them to bed again for the past few weeks because pants hurt my belly.

Aimee also sells nursing tops and pants if you're not into gowns (which I never was before these!  I'd like to grab a few shirts and pants myself but we just can't afford them right now with Christmas, etc.). : )

  • I just wore the hospital gowns, why spend that much money on something you are just going to leak all over anyway? I could just reach back and undo the bow, pull down the front and nurse away...mesh panties on the bottom half, I just had people turn away when I got in/out of bed and when I was going to be up for a while, I put a gown on the back to cover my behind. Now I am a pumper (the babies never got a good hold of nursing and were losing weight) and I have to pump in the middle of the night on the same schedule they eat so I just went and got a bunch of tanks with a shelf bra in them from Sams and I pull down the shoulder straps to pump...you could probably do the same to nurse. I was having a big problem with leaking at night when I tried to wear regular tanks or a tshirt to bed so the shelf bra lets me put the nursing pads in there so I don't wake up smelling like rotten milk anymore!
