Q about sleep positions while pregnant

Sorry in advance if this is a stupid question but i remember with DD they said not to sleep on your stomach after a certain point and later in the pregnancy not to sleep on your back.  I am the only one hwo as heard of this? Does it change/for multiples?

Re: Q about sleep positions while pregnant

  • i asked my OB if it was earlier for twins --- b/c i remembered it was 16w for singletons... he said "you can sleep any way you can sleep - you need sleep, that is what is most important- don't worry about HOW you are sleeping"... and he was right - my body didn't LIKE to be flat on my back for very long- so it wasn't an issue... I had lots of pillows propped up on both sides- and spend most of my time either on my side, or laying on my back, but on a slant b/c i had tons of pillows on the one side to "land on" when i rolled on to my back.

you can sleep on your stomach as long as it's comfortable- but that's not long with twins.

It's always best to sleep on your left side- most blood flow, etc... but obviously you can't always be on the left.

basically, your body will tell you the best way to sleep.

This.  I slept on my tummy for a while and then even on my back.  My body VERY clearly let me know what I could no longer do it.  You'll know, and you will then feel more comfortable on your side anyway.

  • i still kinda sorta sleep on my stomach sometimes...more like on my left side but kind of facing down?  IDK - sleeping on my right side all the time really makes my hip hurt, and i never could sleep on my back.

but i agree with pps, your body will tell you when you are in a position you shouldn't be.  i was laying on my back reading the other night and all of a sudden got really nauseous, but that feeling went away as soon as i rolled onto my side.

  • I wasn't able to sleep on my stomach after about 8-9 weeks (just made me uncomfortable). Later in pregnancy they say to lay on one side or the other because if you lay flat on your back you will cut off blood flow to the vena cava. This will lessen blood flow to you as well as the babies.

I have found, especially in the last two months that I can't lay flat on my sides either. So I prop the upper part of my body up with tons of pillows. Pillows under my knees, body pillow behind my back, and body pillow under the belly... Wow, maybe my husband is right and I am becoming a pillow horde...lol.

As you get further along, you might just have to play around and figure out what works best for you. I do suggest having a pillow behind your back as well as a flatter pillow under your belly. For some reason that makes a big difference when the belly takes over.

    Good Luck!

this. I have a theory that the number of pillows you need in bed is equal to the number of weeks you are pregnant!
