3rd Trimester

Membrane Sweep...Do I Want One??

Had my (hopefully last) appointment with the midwife today. I'm "due" on Thursday, but at each appointment she automatically books another for the week ahead. She said if I haven't had the baby over the weekend and 'would like an internal' at my appointment next Monday, she can do a membrane sweep if I want.

Now A) I've never had an internal up to this point (they're not routine in the UK and only offered after you pass your due date), and B) I don't know if I want a membrane sweep or not. Who knows...I may be gagging for one by next week...

Any reasons why I may or may not want one? (Boo for having to make up my own mind)

Re: Membrane Sweep...Do I Want One??

  • I say go for it.  Can't hurt the process any, right?

  • Go for it.  I had my membranes scraped when pregnant with dd and had progress the next day.
  • With my last pregnancy my doctor told me she doesn't do them.  She said they're painful, they make you bleed and cramp, and way more often then not they don't trigger labor b/c your body isn't ready.

    DD(7), DS(4.5), DS(2.5), DS(baby)
  • it can jump start your labor...i say it couldnt hurt, because sometimes it works and sometimes it doesnt...you have a 50/50 chance of going into labor 48 hours later, or a couple days later...

  • I had one with DD. OMGosh it hurt so bad!  Personally it did nothing for me, just made me bleed a little bit and get all hormonal. I don't think I would do it again.
  • Do it. It might be a little uncomfortable, but really, who is comfortable at this point in pregnancy anyways??
  • I'm having it done tomorrow. My dr. offered to do it Thursday at my appointment but I declined after he said I was 3cm and 70% and he was sure I'd go into labor that night or the next day. Nerves got the best of me, but I told him if I didn't go into labor on my own by the next appointment we would do it then....so...tomorrow it is!

  • I had it done twice (at 38 and 39 weeks) with no change in progress. The first time just felt like a regular internal, the second time hurt a bit becuase she streched my cervix out another 1/2 cm. The only risk is accidently breaking your water and the chance of infection after. Might as well try everything I figure.
