"At least you're not pregnant" - RANT!

So, I lost a major client last week. I had a meeting on Friday with someone who had wanted me to help her fund-raise in my former capacity, but since I no longer have the job, it doesn't much help her. ANYWAY...long story short...we're talking about my looking for new opportunities, and she looks me dead in the eye and goes, "Honey, it could be so much worse. What if you were pregnant? What would you do then! Count your blessings! If you want a career, don't even think about kids til 40!"

I felt like sinking onto the floor right then and there. If this is the attitude people have about moms/pregnant women in the workplace, I'm doomed to a life waiting tables at my local Denny's. GRR. I felt like kicking her in the teeth.

  • Oh she is just crazy! I have a great career! Even left the state my co is in and they kept me on and set me up at home! Left for 12 weeks for my 1st, came back, and 6 months after I got back was promoted.  Don't get down, just show them working moms still got it!

  • I'm sorry!! That sucks and I'm pretty sure I would have burst into tears right there!!
  • What a moron. I wouldn't pay her a moments attention.  Idiot.

  • What a Bi*ch!! Don't listen to her.
  • Oh please, what an extreme way of thinking. Saying kids = death of your life/career is about as narrow-minded as saying having a baby and going back to work = death of family.

  • That's nonsense!!  I know plenty of successful career women (my director and vp are both moms) who make the balance work.  Don't let your friend bring you down!
  • Agreed with the above poster.  If everyone thought this way, no one would procreate.  Sounds like a crazy, old, destined-to-be, spinster to me.
  • She is totally wrong.  I had a $15/hr desk job prior to having my daughter.  Now I have a great paying career and another baby on the way.  The best thing about having such a great job, is that I can take up to 6 months off with my baby!  I couldnt say that at my previous job.

Ditto. Just don't pay attention to her.

  • That is just ridiculous. What year does she think this is?! Don't listen to her. I am 34 and have a career (I am the head registrar in a large museum) and I am perfectly capable of being a professional and having a child simultaneously. I actually feel sorry for her. Just think of what she is going to miss out on in life with that attitude.

  • People use the fact that they have kids as a lame @ss reason they haven't gotten the promotion/raise/recognition they want, when 9 times out of 10 their career blows because they suck at what they do.  Kids or no.

  • This is early wave feminism.  There was a time when this was true and there are a lot of women out there that still think this.

However, post-feminism thinking tells you the exact opposite that you are empowered enough to have both.  But, this is why, sometimes, having a woman for a boss or mentor is not always a benefit because if they are stuck in this old way of thinking they will always have that idea in their head that you aren't able to do it and you aren't completely dedicated because you made decisions differently than they did.

    You can do both.

  • Go ahead and kick her in the teeth! :)

  • Oh gosh! I WOULD have kicked her in the teeth.

Just hang in there. Things will always work out. Some people can just be downers.

  • That is a total lie. LIE. LIE. LIE. I have seen a lot of successful women starting their family earlier than 40. She needs some slappin'.
