A friend of mine was telling me he'd read a story about a family that had their house robbed while they were at a football game. Apparently, their Garmin was in the car and someone broke in and pushed "Go Home" and followed the directions back to their house, robbed it, and then returned the car to the football game.
So apparently the recommendation now is to put in something close to your home (gas station, etc) instead of your home address.
I'd never thought of that before, but it makes good sense!
Re: PSA if you have a Garmin (or other GPS)
The garmin doesn't work like that because you have to put in a password to get it to work. At least mine does.
People can find out your address if you have your owners card in the glove box too!
I was warned of this when we bought my car. My 'go home' button is actually password protected. However, I didn't put our actually address in there anyway; it's an address that is near our neighborhood.
Scary, huh?!
Mine is not password protected, but I guess maybe I should look into that.
I hadn't thought about the registration card either. I guess nothing is safe...ever!
OMG, almost exactly:) I feel silly now...but I'm still going to see about putting a password on my "go home" button. Or changing the address.
I could not understand how they got into the house and drove the car... they had keys? well, it's a myth anyway and I read that there was a garage door opener I guess?
We don't have those things at my house, but it did cross my mind when my car was broken into and my GPS was stolen at a parking lot..and that "go home" button had my address in there. But then I figured since they did not have my keys... I had not much to worry about (other than replacing my car window and buying a new GPS).
But I do really like an idea of putting a near by address into the GPS... just in case... you never know...
If you are dumb enough to leave your keys in your car at a football game, you kind of are asking to get robbed. The GPS hardly factors in.
I dont know if this is true or not but I remember hearing a story about a guys car or office that was broken in to and his wallet, cell phone, etc was stolen. He texted "wifey" "home" or something like that that he forgot the password to the atm and she text the password back and the thief emptied the bank account.
I think it is a story along the same lines of the garmin story but it does make you think about not labeling yourself personally on gps systems or cell phones, etc.
In my cell phone, everyone is labeled by name, even daycare. it's her name, not "daycare". DH is not the hubs or whatever, it's Patrick. It sucks though because if you have an emergency situation, then someone can't flip through your phone and call home, or hubby or IL's or whatever.
I guess someone who broke in could take the GPS itself and find their way to your house? But yeah, leaving your keys in the car is asking for trouble.
I do the exact opposite. I do mom (moms name) Roger (husband) Alicia (sister) etc so if Im in an accident or I lose my phone someone can call and get ahold of someone.
The main issue with the bank/text thing is to NOT text passwords. Call and ask for it. I would never text dh and ask for a password. If dh text me and asked I would call him back and give it to him.
