3rd Trimester

Right side rib pain

For the last couple of weeks, I've had some extreme rib pain on the right side. It's right under my boob, on the front, side and back. Worse when I'm spending a lot of time sitting. Asked my OB about it last week and basically he said suck it up (thanks doc). I've been icing at night and taking some tylenol but that only does so much. Any thoughts on how to lessen the pain, save for giving up sitting (which doesn't jive too well with my desk job)?

Re: Right side rib pain

  • Unfortunately, your Dr is right!  There is no relief and nothing you can do unless you're ready to give birth.  I've been dealing with this issue for about 6 weeks now.  The only slight relief I've been able to find is get up and walk for a little bit...it gets baby out of your ribs temporarily at least.

  • I had the same thing the last several weeks of my pregnancy.  It had to do with the way she was lying and unfortunately you Dr. is right!  :(  Hope it goes by fast!
  • I've been dealinng with that too! Once, I sneezed while baby was all curled up under my right rib...I almost cried it hurt so much! My childbirth class teacher said that she was bruised near her ribs with one of her pregnancies. Hang in there!
  • I found that doing stretches made the pain more bearable, at least for a little while.  I'd stand up and lift my right arm over my head and reach as far as I could to the left and slightly forward, like I was trying to reach something on a really high shelf.

    I commiserate.  It's no fun.

  • Yup. Only mine was my left side and he actually bruised me because it's his favorite place to kick.

And then, blessedly, he dropped. Now I only have occasional rib pain, which I far prefer.

  • I heard something about raising your hand over your head to help LO move out of your ribs.

  • I'm having this too,  I actually think I have a bruise under there.

I've been tossing my arm over my head a bunch.  It looks ridic.  but it works

  • I've been carrying very high this entire pregnancy and suffered from terrible rib pain, especially on my right side, since the very beginning of the 3rd Tri. It was so bad that my doctor finally mentioned that my ribs were seperating slightly in order to make more room for baby. The pain was excruciating and, unfortunately, nothing took it away. I couldn't sit for any amount of time, driving was miserable, and I felt like I could never breathe. THe pain would very literally take my breath away at times.

The only advice I have is to hang in there. Now that the baby has started to drop, I'm finally getting some relief and the pain has almost entirely subsided. It will get better - I promise!

  • yeah i got the same response.  And beyond the 'suck it up' comment, they warned me that it would get worse, which it has.  I can't sit still at all.  I am so squirmy that my patients probably think that I am nuts.  Tylenol has not done much for me either.  I try ot get up as much as possible and stretch to the left side with my right arm extended all the way over my head.  I also sleep on my left side with a moist heating pad on my ribs and that helps a little.  Supposedly when you drop it gets better but I'm 36 wks and that still hasn't happened!
  • I have had the same issue for several weeks. Mine was actually made worse by a bad respiratory infection which made me cough horribly. I ended up tearing rib muscles and dislocated ribs. The location you are describing sounds like it is right where the uterine ligament attached to the spine. I recommend seeing a chiropractor. What can eventually happen, if not already, is that the  pulling from the ligament can make all your muscle tense up and then cause  other areas of your spine to lock up. My chiropractor has been great with helping to adjust me and give me routines( heating, ice, exercises, etc) to help teh issue. I am not saying this may be happening to you, but it may be worth it to see a chiropractor. My OB basically said "suck it up" even when I had trouble breathing and could not sit or sleep.

    HTH!
