1st Trimester

How many ultrasounds?

I've seen some people say that they will only get one u/s at 20 weeks, but other people have gotten 2-3 ultrasounds just in the first tri. Is it just up to the doctor? Or do you get more ultrasounds if you're high risk?

Re: How many ultrasounds?

  • While I know it's different here in Canada, I think it depends on the high-risk factor as well.

So far we've had 4 - 1 at the hospital when I was there for dehydration, 1 for dating, 1 for the NT scan, and 1 last thursday b/c of severe bleeding.

I don't know if we're going to have anymore though...i hope so!

  • If you are high risk, you get a lot more than those that are not high risk. If I opted not to do the NT scan, I would only get 1 ultrasound, at 20 weeks.
  • It depends on insurance, the doctor, and risk.

I have had 2 already, and I will probably have one every 4 weeks.  I'm considered high-risk.

  • I get one u/s and it'll be 18-20 weeks. I charted and have normal cycles so I didn't need an u/s to date the pregnancy. I am high risk because I had pre-e with my last pregnancy but pre-e doesn't usually hit until later and I don't need u/s to monitor for that. I think its up to the dr and how many problems you are having with either bleeding or whatnot.

  • I only had the 20 week one with my son, and then another at 29 weeks because I went to the hospital for spotting and then I almost passed out (eep!) so they did another to check on him.

This time around I have already had one.  I am sure I will get at least one more around 20 weeks.

I know for SURE they were only planning on the 1 ultrasound with my son because of my insurance.  I have a different Dr. this time and slightly different insurance, so I'm not entirely sure how many I'll get.

  • With DD, they did one very early to confirm uterine pg, and the 'big' one at 18-20 weeks.  They also did one much later (38 weeks) when there was some concern/question if my water was leaking.

With this one, they did an early one at 8 weeks.  I anticipate from here on they'll only be doing the 'big' one, barring any problems.

  • I'm not even a little high risk, and have had two. One at my first appointment at 8 weeks, and one last week at my NT scan. I'll have my next one at 18-20 weeks for gender, and should find out at my appointment today how many more I can expect. I love it - it's so fun to see the peanut dancing away on the screen!

  • Like others said it depends on the doctors style, your risk factors, and to some degree your insurance.

Last preg. I was very high risk and had weekly u/s until my m/c. Because I'm older and have a history of m/c I probably will have more than usual.

  • I think it depends on the doctor's office. Mine has their own u/s machine. For my first pregnancy I got an u/s at 8w (first appt.) unfortunately lost that baby a week later. This time around I got one at 6w, another at 8w and will get them at every appt here on out - having twins!

  • I've had two u/s so far and I'm 8w5d. The first u/s was part of the first prenatal appointment. The second (last Friday) was due to the fact that I had some spotting on Thursday night. Luckily, everything looks good!
