Re: Sushi craving!

  • I'm not pg but I LOVE sushi! I would think that imitation crab should be ok. (since it's not even real crab lol)
  • Loading the player...
  • I definitely think the imitation crab is fine...anything cooked is ok too. Just be sure to tell them no roe.

I have been craving it too--so I've been getting california rolls and avocado rolls. It's not spicy tuna, but it'll do for now Smile

  • Oh ya no more tobiko...man I love that stuff! Thanks ladies for making me feel better. So crystal shrimp, california rollsn and caterpillar rolls for me. And mussells since they are cooked! Better than nothing but I will miss my salmon and yellow tail.

  • I did a few pieces of raw but made sure I got them from a nice place that I frequent a lot. My Dr had no problem with it as long as it was a reputable place! I enjoyed it a LOT! :)

California rolls & dragon rolls work well too!

  • I had some California rolls last night.  They are definitely ok!  We went because since I found out I was pregnant, DH has had a sushi craving knowing that I am very limited to what I can eat:)
  • This has been my biggest craving.  I don't know about the crab.  I have thought about going an getting eel (which I love) but didn't know about the mercury content in it...

  • As long as you are at a reputable place, you can eat what you want. Don't eat more then 12 ounces of anything for the mercury content, but eat what makes you happy. My doc is perfectly fine with the occasional raw fish as long as it's from a good place - I would probably stay away from supermarket sushi, but a good restaurant with high turnover will have high quality, fresh fish. Enjoy it!

  • Agree with the previous post about finding a reputable place, however my doc said "No" to California Rolls b/c the crab is either imitation or cooked earlier...And in either case, has been sitting out like deli meat at Subway (it wasnt cooked right there in front of you and used immediately). I've steered clear of any sushi and have just ordered tempura.
  • I just had my sushi and it was definitely not as yummy as usual since I couldn't have my raw stuff. DH wouldn't even let me have ONE piece of salmon. It was depressing :( Oh well all for a good cause!!!

  • About california rolls - the crab is kept in a case that is refrigerated, so wouldn't that be okay?  It's not really just "sitting out".

  • Look up the fish used for imitation crab meat. I think it may be one of the ones with higher mercury. Not sure. I can't remember the name of it right now.

    Avoid Halibut and Tuna.

  • As long as you're going to a reputable place any choice you make will be fine.

  • Thanks! I believe imitation crab has white fish in it. I think I remember reading it when I made my crab salad. And white fish has the least mercury. So small amounts will still be fine. :)

  • I had some too a couple of weekends ago--I chose all cooked sushi, no problem.

  • Quoted from GenRN45 on the Nest's GP board:

You CAN have sushi while you're pg. You just have to use your heads, avoid fish that contains high mercury content and get it from somewhere reputable that always has fresh fish.

Two of my favorite links from the American Pregnancy Association:

    Mercury Levels in Fish

    Mercury Levels in Sushi

The women in Japan have sushi as a staple in their diet. You just have to be smart about it. It physically pains me to see girls that think they have to miss out on such a vital part of a well rounded healthy diet.

  • I had sushi friday ! It was so great because I have been feeling so deprived. I had eel advacado and shrimp tempura rolls and I was perfectly satisfied. I was going to have some tuna too, but I had soo much to eat already that it really was enough. I think it's important to enjoy stuff. At first I felt like I should avoid anything like sushi (like what if they cut your veggie roll with the same knife as the tuna?) but really, you have to just live a little.
