For those who use restaurant.com

I was thinking of signing up for this for some Christmas presents, but the certificates specify use only on certain days and having to spend a certain amount.  DH thinks this isn't a good gift because it's restricting.  Have you gotten around these restrictions?  How have the recipients of the certificates reacted?

Thanks!

  • I have always followed the rules to the certificates. We buy them all the time. I never eat at one of my fav restaurants without a GC from restaurant.com

  • They usually stick to the restrictions. I wouldn't give them as gifts since they are really more like coupons.  We usually end up spending a fair amount more than the certificate.
  • I don't buy from them anymore because of all the restrictions. Also, I had bought one, and they "changed" the rules at the restaurant and imposed even more restrictions. I was so annoyed about it that I haven't gotten a certificate ever since. That was 4 years ago.

I wouldn't buy them as a gift because of the restrictions, but I could see people buying them for themselves to use.....

  • I originally was going to get them as teachers' gifts but changed my mind because of the restrictions. I only give them as "obligatory squeaky wheel" gifts to people, aka family members who complain about getting couples gifts.  Stick out tongue
  • I've used them for myself to save money, but I would not give them as a gift.  it is really a coupon, NOT a gift certificate and you still spend a decent amount of money when using them, although you get more bang for your buck.

  • I just bought some as gifts tonight---one for my mom, one for dad, one for sister, and one for godmother.

They don't care that they are kinda like "coupons"--it's really the thought that counts for them.

But if it was a "real gift" I'd be buying--I'd probably not buy one of these. :)

  • I bought some certificates for the site itself.  We live in an area that has a TON of participating restaurants, so I bought $50 and $25 certificates for family.  A bunch of the restaurants had restrictions that weren't a big deal (i.e. with purchase of 2 entrees).  Plus, I figured a certificate for the site itself would be better than for a particular restaurant, because then the recipient is stuck with only one place.

I bought $225 worth of certificates for $18.
