Nursing to sleep

Provided that your baby has nursed long enough for a feeding, if he/she falls asleep at the breast, do you ever skip the burping and just lay him/her down?  If so, does an air bubble ever come back to bite you? (Short nap/sleep stretch due to being uncomfortable, gas, spit up during sleep)

Re: Nursing to sleep

  • With both of my girls they generally had no major gas/reflux issues. When they were really young, I would often try to burp them (gently) after they fell asleep, and they usually slept through it but would usually burp.In my experience, it's not the end of the world if they occasionally don't burp. Remember, a baby that falls asleep at the breast is usually a very happy baby!

  • my LO always falls asleep with his head to the side so i'm not so worried about burping him after he falls asleep b/c if anything should come up, it will come out -if you're LO sleeps facing up -i would burp him just in case something should come back out (for choking purpose)..

There have been times where i do burp him and then lay him down -most times he likes it and sleeps right through it.

  • We have been having spitting up issues so I make sure to burp after every feeding if possible.  There are times when DD wont burp but I have to at least try b/c I will feel bad later if she ends up spitting up everywhere later.  Unfortunetly she tends to wake up a little after burping but sometimes she will go right back to sleep.
