Thawing Frozen Milk

All of the info I have says to take it out and put in fridge for 12 hours. Then I saw on here that someone was talking about boiling water and putting in a cup and putting the bag in that. Is that for thawing or for warming it up for LO?

We are having a hard time and I don't know how much longer I'll BF, but I at least want him to have the breast milk.

Re: Thawing Frozen Milk

  • I usually heat up water in the microwave and then set the packet of frozen milk in there to thaw.  I have tried doing it in the fridge, but it always seems to stay pretty frozen.  I wnated to thaw it and make bottles for during the day when I'm gone so the nanny doesn't have to deal with thawing it in the water, but it never works out.  I don't know if my fridge is too cold or what.  After it is thawed in the water you can't make it cold again, so if you are going to thaw in the water do it right before feeding.

  • I also menat to say...if you pump milk and it is in the fridge you can use the hot water to warm it up for baby to drink.  That's usually what we do.
  • I have found it takes more than 24 hours to thaw in the fridge. On the counter it takes 12 hours, so that is what I do. Or I run warm (not hot) water over it.
  • I usually get tap water as hot as it can be and set the bag of frozen milk in a bowl of the hot water.  After a little bit, I check it and usually put fresh hot water in the bowl since the frozen milk cools the water.
