mixing breastmilk and formula

I'm ready to introduce my dd to formula. I have mastitis for the 2nd time in 5 weeks and with going back to work really want her to take formula during the day. My pedi said not to mix the 2 in order to get her used to it, b/c they don't mix very well. My dd refuses to take the formula though! I see many moms that have mixed and wonder if it worked for you?

Re: mixing breastmilk and formula

  • My Pedi suggested it originally.  I probably wouldn't have thought to do it otherwise. We haven't noticed any problems with bottles with BM and formula mixed together.

  • I had a LC suggest mixing formula with BM since formula can cause some constipation.  We supplement a few oz per day because of low supply and DD has taken it mixed and by itself.

  • they mixed it in the hospital and so i have done it ever since (supply issue). i dont think weve had a problem. i wonder why they 'dont mix well'?? did the dr say?
  • I was told by both my pediatrician and a lactation consultant that if you mix the two, it will "satisfy" your baby more (due to it being more rich and caloric).  However, it will lead her/him to become "dissatisfied" with just the breast milk alone and will cause her/him to fuss because she/he will not feel as full as long.

I would try a different formula if your dd doesn't like the one you've got.  But also remember that breastfeeding/pumping will actually help with the mastitis.  I had it twice, and OUCH!!

    Good Luck!

  • I mixed with DS, and he took it well. DH gave DD a full on bottle of formula the other day b/c I was out at the store and hadn't made it back in time before she was hungry, and she ate it, but spit up quite a bit of it. I personally think if they've been on BM, straight up formula is quite a change for their little digestive system- if you mix, they're getting some of what they're used to, along with the new stuff. I plan on mixing for DD when we "officially" start her mid-day feeding on the bottle this week.
