Babies: 3 - 6 Months

When someone asks you how old LO is...

how do you respond?

Do you still do weeks? Months?

Do you say half months? Round up or down?

For example, if your LO was 4.5 months, would you say "four months", "four and a half months", "almost 5 months", or "20 weeks"?

Re: When someone asks you how old LO is...

  • I've said months since about 7 weeks. I always round the month down. That way I usually avoid stupid comments.

  • I say months and no, I don't say half months. I also swore that once he turns a year old, I won't be one of those people that says he's 15 months, 21 months, etc. A little over a year or almost 2 is good enough.

  • She's 3.5 months and I just say 3. Its quick and easy

I agree with this! I can never figure out quickly what "21 months" means... "almost two" is so much easier. I'll probably go with "a little over a year", "a year and a half", and then "almost two".

  • 5 months, 5.5 months, and if he's close to turning a new month I round up.  I quit saying weeks around 2.5 months.  I know most people expect you to say months.  If you were to say 30 weeks down the road, people might give you the side eye. lol

ETA:  So Since DS will be 6 months in a week and a half, I would say almost 6 months or 5.5 months.

I plan to say months up until 2 years.  They say that because there is a big difference between months even at that age.

  • I round up or down on months, depending on what's she's the closest to.  I haven't said weeks since she was 8 weeks old.
  • We stopped doing weeks when he was two months, I think. I agree, nobody without a kid has any idea how many weeks=months (just like during pregnancy, so many people get confused when you tell them how many weeks you are!).

I have been saying "four months" for the first week or two of the month, "four and a half months" for the third week, and then "almost five months" for the last week or so before he turns.

  • I use half months or say she'll be 3 months next week. If I use weeks people look at me like I;m crazy.
  • Months - and at this point I say half months.  Maybe I'll stop that when he is a year old?
  • i say half months, or i say "almost ___" if he's closest to a full month or half month.
  • I do months and half months and round up/down as necessary.
  • It confuses me when people say weeks past 12 weeks or so, so I try to make it less confusing for others by just rounding.  I do say 4 months, 4.5 months, and if it's almost when he'll turn the next month I'll say 5 months next week.

I'll probably end up saying 1, 1.5, almost 2.  It's easier that way!

  • I say months.  For 4.5 months, I would say "four & a half months".  Weeks make it too complicated. "My LO is 54 weeks" is just crazy & who wants to do that math?!

This, exactly.  I'll also say something like, "He'll be 6 months on Tuesday" if he's that close to his monthday.

There is a big difference, I agree with that. So maybe if it was another mom or someone asked me how many months, I'd say. But in general, people just want a quick and easy answer and not math so they can determine where your child should be developmentally.

  • I say months and days/weeks, for examply DS is 5 months 3 days. After 5m 1w he'll be 5m 2w, 5m 3w etc.

  • I usually tell them in days. Stick out tongue

But really, I go with months/half-months.

  • Months, including halves and "just shy of/just over." Yesterday someone asked and we said "just over 4.5 months."

  • Months.  And I try to be as precise as possible (not like strangers care!)  Now I'd say "almost 5 months."
