Dh and I live in a small apartment so we are planning on using a pack and play as a co-sleeper/crib next to our bed. Do you think the mattress that comes with it (it is a little padded but firm) is good enough or we should buy something like the Naturepedic portacrib pad? Thanks!

Totally fine. Have you felt crib mattresses?
We used the bassinet feature of our PNP for several mo for DS before moving him into the crib and we probably will again for this baby.
" just naps b/c an infant only sleeps about 4 hours at a time and once a child is sleeping through the night they should be out of the PnP anyways."
Because of comfort issues/safety?
Its a thin mattress but a newborn wont notice..DS still sleeps fine in them at grandmas- we have this sheet which makes it more comfy
