I am a Kindergarten teachers and one of my parents is asking to throw me a shower. They want to do it after school in the classroom? I am thinking it might be real awkward, however, I really appreciate the offer. WWYD?
As nice as that is, I wouldn't want it. Personally I like to keep work and home very separate. In that situation, I would go to my principal and ask him to be the bad guy and say that it was not allowed, etc.
I kind of feel as though it would be awkward too. I mean some things just need to be kept seperate. It's definately a sweet gesture, but I would make an excuse.
When I got married 2 years ago I had the most awesome fifth grade class ever. The parents were out of this world. They threw me a surprise shower during math class one day-- the PTA president and VP both had their sons in my class- and they even had told my principal about it. They brought a cake and punch, made me a veil on a headband, and the kids had made me a picture frame with messages on it, and brought me little gifts like cookbooks and stuff. It was really sweet-- I was definitely shocked and a bit uncomfortable at first, but looking back now it is a really nice memory.
I know one of the other kindergarten teachers at my school last year had a surprise shower thrown by parents and they had a great time. I think it depends on your set of parents/class. I don't think I'll have anyone do that in my class this year, but maybe I'm wrong! Maybe suggest it happens during a recess time or down time during the day to make it quick & less awkward.

Maybe because the kids are really excited? I've never heard of that, but I do have a teacher friend whos class threw her a birthday party and the families sent in cake and gifts... I don't think my class will think of a shower this year, I imagine it's tough though, really sweet of them to care so much kind of awkward to do it, especially after school? I tihnk I would go to the principal and just ask him what he thinks...
I teach 4th grade and just had a mom in my class ask how I felt about "the kids" having a shower for me. I told her I thought it sounded fun! I have a really awesome class this year and wonderful parents to work with, so I don't think it will be awkward, and it will be done sometime during school, not after. I have so many parents telling me how excited their kids are for the baby to come, so I want them to join in on the fun too! My friend had a baby 3 months ago, and her kindergartners threw her a shower too, so it's not unheard of for me.
I taught 1st grade 2 years ago when I got married. My room moms threw me a shower. 2 or 3 moms came in one morning with normal "school party" food and a couple gifts for me from the kids. All the kids "hid" while I was called across the hall so they could set up (obviously I knew about it, but we pretended it was a surprise). They were there for about 30-45 minutes and the kids LOVED it. It really wasn't awkward at all and everyone had a great time.
I don't see anything wrong with accepting it if they offer. I would just encourage them to do it during the day and limit the parents that actually come in. Make it more for the kids. Enjoy!
I teach (well, taught) high school special education. My kids threw me a surprise party on my last day of teaching, last week. We have a "no parties" rule at my school - so they even went as far as writing to the principal to ask his permission! In the end, he helped them plan the party to be in the cafeteria... the only thing was that it ended up not being a surprise party (even though I acted surprised) because several students kept telling me about the food they brought or the gift they were bringing - my students with autism aren't really good with secrets!
It ended up being great and a memory that I will always have. Several parents were there, my other SpEd teachers and my assistants. Kids had fun and I had fun!
I would accept as long as my principal ok'ed it, which I'm sure she would. In my case a shower during school hours would be better than one after school.
Last year I co-taught for a portion of the day with another teacher and her room parents arranged a baby shower for her. They had a diaper cake and snacks and the children had the option of contributing to a gift card.
Re: Teachers...parent thrown shower?
