Procardia & labor question...

My doc had originally planned to take my Procardia down to 10mg when I was 34 weeks but has since changed his mind. He said I will need to stay on it to deliver.

Now Dh and I have decided to forgo the scheduled c-section at 36 weeks and go into labor on our own - I would like to try to get to at least 37 weeks. (My mom does not agree - she is worried about me going into labor and rupturing my uterus since I had a previous C - but that is a different issue)

Will I be able to go into labor onmy own if I am still on the Procardia? I still get contractions through the meds but not even 1 per hour.

Maybe a silly question but I thought I would throw it out there. I see him Monday.

Re: Procardia & labor question...

  • Heck I got more freaking contractions when I was ON Procardia then I have since I've stopped taking it.  I'm would assume you can still go into labor, if you couldn't, nobody would ever have their babies before they're term.

  • I ended up with an emergency c section a few days before my scheduled c section. The morning they were prepping me for the c, I started having awful contractions and the nurse who was monitoring me said the babies were coming on their own anyway! I was on procardia to the end...
  • I still had alot of contractions but nothing that was turning into "active labor" while I was taking the procardia.  A couple days after I stopped, I went into labor and they did a c section (both babies were breech).  I suppose everyone is different though.
  • I stopped taking Procardia at 36wks 1 day and had my girls at 36wks 3 days. I was still having breakthrough contrax that were still dilating my cervix.
