BFing Moms - how much/often do you drink?

Post on 0-3 made me wonder. I have a glass of wine probably 2 out of 3 nights after DS is in bed (he sleeps for about 7 hours before he wakes up to eat). I don't pump, and I've never drunk any more than that.

In that other post, a couple of people said they've had 5 or 6 drinks then fed their LO. What's your limit?

Re: BFing Moms - how much/often do you drink?

  • I have a glass of wine 5 or 6 nights per week, but only 1.  I won't go over that while I'm still BF.

  • I have a glass of wine or a beer or two a few times a week, right after she goes to bed, when I know I'll have at least 6 hours or so before she eats again.  If in doubt, I'll give her a pumped bottle, though.
  • I wouldn't nurse drunk, or even tipsy. The number of drinks would depend on how long I took to drink them. The most I've had so far is probably 4, but that was spread out over 8 hours or so (thanksgiving).

  • And OMG that there are people who BF their babies after 5 or 6 drinks!!
  • I don't drink very often at all but I'll have a beer if I know it is going to be at least 4 hours before the lil guy needs to eat again.  I tend to err on the side of caution.
  • I have had 2 beers since DD was born.  I think if I liked wine I would maybe drink it once a week, but I'm not much of a drinker anyway.

I wouldn't drink more than 1 while BFing.  When I was still in 0-3 I had someone tell me not to be such a p*ssy, and that I could drink 3 or 4 a day and it wouldn't effect LO.  Ummmm....sorry, I believe my Doctor more than some random person on the internet.

I know!  "Oh hey, I'm gonna drink a 6er, then nurse my baby."

  • if you can drive, you can BF.  I have no problem having a few drinks and pumping.  I EP now.  I have one drink an hour and wait 1 hour before pumping.

  • I just read the post on 0-3 and she had her last drink at 10pm and then didn't nurse again til after 5am.  I had thought this was about getting trashed and nursing your LO right afterwards.

Ok, that is not as bad as I thought.

    p.s.  we have that onesie!

  • I'll have a glass of wine or beer several times a week, but not more than that.

Yeah I should've clarified that probably! But still, it seems like a lot, even if you aren't going to nurse for 7 hours IMO.

  • 2 glasses of wine = tipsy **Gretchen**

It's averaging every other week for me.

  • I wasn't a big drinker before C was born.  I had a 2 glasses of wine on Thanksgiving after he went to bed, and a glass the next night.  In both cases he didn't eat until 7+ hours later.

  • I have a beer or a glass of wine probably 3-4 nights per week. Occasionally I'll have two, if he's just gone to bed and I don't expect to nurse for a while - but if he did wake up, I'd have no problem nursing.

A couple weeks ago I had my HS reunion and I had 4-5 glasses of wine and felt really drunk (I'm a lightweight now!) - so I stopped drinking at midnight, pumped and dumped at 2:30 a.m., gave him a bottle at 6 and then nursed as usual at 8 a.m.

  • I m waiting til i am done bfing to drink
  • i don't have any. i never know when my LO will get up again and he has not been doing well and occasionally wakes up 3 hours after i feed him, so i don't want ot risk it. plus, i don't like alcohol all that much, so it's not really a sacrifice.
  • I have the occasional glass of wine.  Only one if I'm going to pump - maybe two if I'm going to bed and it will be 6-8 hours before I pump again (I EP).  I have been having supply issues, so I've been having a beer before bed each night out of desperation.
  • I've drank 4-5 beers then nursed the next morning a few times.  It is always at least 7 hours from my last drink until I nurse.  DS has his last meal around 10pm and sleeps until 8:30-9am pretty consistently.  More often I just have 1-2 beers or glasses of wine.
  • I'll drink a beer (once I had two!) every couple of nights. DH and I *love* beer (that sounds bad, doesn't it?). Right now we have all the seasonal ales in the garage fridge and I'm thinking I might run out and grab one... yum!

  • About once a week I'll have one glass at night. DS keeps getting up earlier and earlier during the night, so I never know when I'll be nursing next. I know I could probably have more, but one puts me in a nice, relaxed mood. Any others and I'd be knocked out.

  • I have a beer (light) almost every night after I put her to bed.  I won't be feeding her for at least 4 hours, sometimes 8.  Tonight I am having 2 because it is Saturday :)
